Impeach the Pope
Washington Post ^ | March 19, 2009 | Robert S. McElvaine

Posted on 03/19/2009 12:27:17 AM PDT by Zakeet

Enough! No--Too much!

Amid all the justified outrage we all feel at Bernie Madoff and the AIG bandits, let us save some intense outrage for Pope Benedict XVI.

After insulting Muslims by declaring in 2006 that Muhammad had brought "things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached," after reiterating (through the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) in 2008 that the subject of the ordination of women is not even open for discussion and declaring that anyone involved with the ordination of women will be automatically excommunicated, after lifting in January of this year the excommunication of Holocaust-denier Richard Williamson, now Benedict XVI opens a visit to Africa by telling the people of a continent decimated by AIDS that the distribution of condoms "increases the problem" of the spread of AIDS.

I am a Catholic and the idea that such a man is God's spokesperson on earth is absurd to me.

There are, of course, no provisions in the hierarchical institution set up, not by Jesus but by men who hijacked his name and in many cases perverted his teachings, for impeaching a pope and removing him from office. But there ought to be.

[Snip]

Let's start a movement within the Catholic Church to impeach Pope Benedict XVI and remove him from office. While we're at it, let's replace him with a woman.

You want to see vitriol? If the local bishop, Wuerl, grows some cajones, then you’d see some vitriol.

This type of commentary on the Holy Father is just typical for the comPost.

Last comment (from me):

The Pope recently wrote the following within a recent letter:

At times one gets the impression that our society needs to have at least one group to which no tolerance may be shown; which one can easily attack and hate. And should someone dare to approach them – in this case the Pope – he too loses any right to tolerance; he too can be treated hatefully, without misgiving or restraint.

I think that says it all.

How about we just impeach God because we don’t agree with the 10 commandments? That’s some arrogance that’s going to come back big on McElvaine some day. Obviously this guy doesn’t think there’s anything after death. The Church should annul any Sacraments he has received (if that’s possible) and then excommunicate him. Win-win!

And while were at it, let's start worshipping Thor!
I've always been partial to Minerva. A beautiful Goddess who is also in charge of mathematics? What's not to admire?

I'd like to start out by thanking you for posting this article. I typically will not visit the compost this early in the morning before taking my blood pressure medicine. Where to start! The only religion that Robert S. McElvaine, Professor of Arts and Letters Millsaps College practices is that of radical secularism, not Catholicism. His many years in the Academy has reduced his beliefs of Catholicism to that of a primitive superstition. Those same beliefs are counter intuitive to 2000 years of Church teachings. This notion that the Catholic Church should “change with the times” and conform to whatever cultural “norms” of the day are would surely be it's swan song. Moral authority would be diminished to the point of making the Church irrelevant, which is exactly his intent. Look at some of the main line Protestant Church's and their shifts in cultural policies and the corresponding declines in membership as a guidepost. I'm sure he would like nothing better than to see women ordained as priests, establish same sex marriage, and have a policy for unlimited abortions but these are not the tenets of the “authoritative” and “patriarchal” Church. He, like many other Catholics expect the Church to conform to their personal beliefs. It would seem impossible that a person believes in a religion when he rejects what a religion proclaims.

Alexis de Tocqueville wrote that America's women were supremely religious because women were the protectors of morals. While the law permits Americans to do as they please, religion prevents them from contemplating, and forbids them to commit, what is rash or unjust. Americans hold religion as indispensable to the maintenance of republican institutions.

Despotism may govern without faith, but liberty can not.

why are so many nonbelievers so obsessed with our community?

I can answer that, I think. Socialism / Communism at its core is a belief that mankind can have paradise here on earth by perfecting the social systems in which man lives and works. Christianity at its core is a belief that mankind is irreparably flawed and cannot ever live in peace, comfort and ultimate salvation without God's grace. They are fundamentally opposed belief systems. Liberals (an all purpose name for Socialists / Communists) direct their ire at what they see as heresy, and since the Catholic Church is the largest Christian Church, Catholicism bears the brunt of the anger.

Apparently, the author is a "Catholic in Name Only". He is a "Cafeteria Catholic" who picks and chooses what to believe. If he is in disagreement with the Church, there is no one to stop him from leaving.
