Helmets have been mandatory in all FIS and USSA downhill races since the late 50’s. They have been mandatory in GS since the 80’s and in SL since the early 90’s.

Natasha was a beautiful, poised, sweet, talented lady. I can just imagine what an amazing Mother she was.
I'm glad her two sons can view her movies as they keep her close to their hearts forever.

I am a skier, FIS Masters World Cup racer and I am a PSIA level 3 full certified instructor. I have coached at ALL levels including World Cup. Yes, I know how to ski!

Its not the fall, its HOW you fall.”
A number of years ago a somewhat local small town preacher with whom I was slightly acquainted was playing tennis & fell backwards hitting his head. That was the end of him.

You called me an idiot in your earlier post for not wearing a helmet ... your coaching acumen overwhelms me ... are you still employed?

If the math is correct, the tip of a 1.7 meter pole covers 2.66 meters to pass through a 90 degree arc. If it takes .25 seconds to cover the arc, the tip of the pole is traveling at 10.67 meters per second! That is 35 feet per second. OUCH!

Marxist or not, her mother is hanging on by her fingertips to sanity.
I've been where she is, and there is nothing bad you could wish on her that is worse than what she's enduring now and will live with until she dies.

I’m sure by now you have Googled it. He died this past Sunday I believe. Like I said, it really bummed me out.

Well you are right on of course. My best friend died in high school. I learned at a very young age how fragile and short life could be which is why I try to cherish every moment.
To: WellyP
Helmets are no guarantee that you won't get seriously injured or die and they give a lot of people a false sense of security.

Boy am I glad you were okay. I think we sometimes try to diagnose ourselves and it’s not a good thing.

What a terrible tragedy. May God bless Natasha and also her family, especially her husband and children. They all must be in such pain right now - my sincerest prayers for them in this time of grief.

No Vanessa Redgrave is her Mother, Lynn her Aunt!

Hooooold on there....
I wasn't being accusing, just matter of fact. I haven't been skiing in several years. The last time I went I separated my shoulder falling on an intermediate slope and I rarely fall. I don't know whether I would wear a helmet at this point. My son is an adult. I like the way the wind feels on my face and in my hair when I am on my way down the slope. If I choose not to wear a helmet I don't want any comments on that. I will take full responsibility.

I think we sometimes try to diagnose ourselves and its not a good thing. Yep -- but I was fortunate.
