LEBANON, Ohio (AP) - A southwest Ohio county is threatening to ignore new food stamp rules because officials say relatively well off people are getting benefits.
Commissioners in Warren County near Cincinnati said Tuesday they want to go back to the old eligibility standards. They were angry after learning that a woman with $80,000 in the bank, a paid-off $311,000 home and a Mercedes qualified for $500 a month in food stamps after she lost her job.
The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services says a change made in October bases eligibility on income. Savings, stocks, cars or other assets are no longer taken into account.
Commissioner Dave Young calls the new rules "really offensive."
Satan?
Agreed. Like a welfare reality show.
Pelosi. What do I win??
I don’t think these are new rules because they’ve been really offensive for years.
Thanks for all the replies. The story speaks for itself.
I will add that 2 months ago, I was waiting in the check out line at a grocery. The woman in front bought a bunch of stuff and tried to pay with her food stamp debit card.
The clerk told her, she could not buy dog food with it. At that point, she told her child to go back and get some hamburger instead.
Just more unintended consequences. You can feed your dog hamburger, but not dry dog food.
Any system that forcibly takes money from one person to give it to another person is going to have inequity and injustice. The problem is not implementation or policy. The problem is that the system exists at all.
An interesting tidbit about items you can buy with food stamps. They actually encourage the purchase of fruit and vegetable seeds and plants for growing your own food, the problem in they do not permit the purchase of items for food storage such as canning jars and freezer bags.
Additionally purchase of a rotisserie chicken from the deli is forbidden, but all the fried chicken TV dinners you want are permitted.
Back when my son was in elementary school, I as working in the office one day when a well dressed lady came in. She was dressed to the nines, loads of gold jewelry. She wanted to apply for free lunches for her kids. I gave her the form and she foilled it out and gave it back. She and I left the building at the same time. She got into a brand new Volvo still had the sticker in the window.
New car, stylish clothes, hair and jewelry, but couldn’t feed her kids?
