MEXICO CITY (AFP) Mexico on Monday said it would place tariffs on nearly 90 US products after Washington canceled a program that allowed some trucks from Mexico to operate in the United States.
There is to be an "increase in customs duty on almost 90 industrial and agricultural products," Economy Minister Gerardo Ruiz Mateos said in a statement.
Ruiz said the increase would represent some 2.4 billion dollars, but did not name the products.
. . . . .
The move drew a sharp rebuke from US Senator John McCain, who said he regretted Mexico's decision and also lashed out at US President Barack Obama and lawmakers for backing "protectionist" policies.
"I deeply regret the action taken by the Mexican government and the harm it may cause to American businesses," said McCain, who lost his bid for the presidency in 2008 to Obama.
"Unfortunately, this is a predictable reaction by the Mexican government to a policy that now puts the United States in clear violation of the North American Free Trade Agreement," he added.
"We must take steps to prevent escalation of further protectionist measures -- actions that only serve to harm American business during these tough economic times when these businesses need a worldwide marketplace to prosper."

First, I was being purposely hyperbolic. Not about building the fence, but about cutting off all trade. 2nd, it was you who brought up oil as a good example not to cut off trade. 3rd, if we refuse mexican oil (or the Saudis oil for that matter), I suggest we replace it with domestic production. This would create far more jobs than would be lost in the oil sector, a sector that pays well, even in ol Mejico.
4th, the fact is mexico benefits far more from trade with us than we do with them. So using a “stick” approach as opposed to bending over and taking their threats is prudent. And if it devolves into an all out trade war, then maybe we’ll just have to make our refrigerators, computer parts, and car components here in the USA.
as for how it relates to illegal immigration, a quarter of Mexico is here in this country, that’s how. We start deporting them in masse, and then lets hear them squawk about their “rights” to infest our roads with their trucks.
The issue is clear.
It is not fear, or mexiphobia as you infer.
Read my post again if you wish.
What's wrong with getting a cut of the money made here illegally (with no taxes paid also) when it is sent to Mexico?
30 Billion a year.
Don’t confuse them with facts. They think exporting all our jobs overseas is a GOOD thing!
Yes, I saw that.
They still will run substandard trucks.
And illegally too.
It’s not like they obey our laws.
There are over 20 million illegal insurgent criminal alien colonists here already, what makes you think all the trucks will be legal and driven by qualified drivers just because of a few pesky laws?
I live in an urban area. I see cars on the road that are rusted through, held together with bailing wire, and driven by coke-bottled-eyed loons.
You cannot scare me. Thursday I drove next to a woman who read a magazine the entire time. The cop in front of me had a cigarette in one hand and her cell phone in another. Which hand was on the steering wheel?
A red Subaru had a scary looking liberal in it who looked to be texting at 65 mph.
Save your hyperbole for Halloween. Where are the statistics showing deaths/accidents traceable to Mexican truck drivers going up since the program began?
Conjuring up bogey men a la the deadly Mexican trucker stories just reminds me of that campfire story about the guy with the hook on lover’s lane.
Scary only if you want to be scared.
If you won’t believe the facts I can’t help you, but if you don’t believe the government who will implement your embargo of Mexican trucks?
Uh, huh. And it only took how many posts for you to make that claim?
2nd, it was you who brought up oil as a good example not to cut off trade.
No, oil was used as an example for why we have a current account deficit with Mexico. That's all.
3rd, if we refuse mexican oil (or the Saudis oil for that matter), I suggest we replace it with domestic production. This would create far more jobs than would be lost in the oil sector, a sector that pays well, even in ol Mejico.
No argument from me on that one. Now that you can admit that cutting off all trade with Mexico wouldn't stop illegal immigration we can move on to other things.
4th, the fact is mexico benefits far more from trade with us than we do with them
You're going to have a hard time proving that but go ahead and make your case. There is no one putting a gun to anyone's head to make these trades. Both parties are acting in their own self interest. How that fact benefits one over another remains to be seen.
then maybe well just have to make our refrigerators, computer parts, and car components here in the USA.
And we can forget everything we've learned about comparative advantage and being embracing everything in the state, nothing outside the state and nothing against the state. Now where have I heard that before.....
The people I know apparently can't.
Maybe it is where they are located.
Of course a real estate bank trust is not ownership.
Plus what with the volatility of Mexico and it's unstable government, it would be quite easy to have an owned home taken by the government in a flash.
Obviously, I am not moving to Mexico and am quite negative towards their policies concerning their relationship/attitude with/towards the USA.
Like I stated before, you vote the numbskulls out. That is my fervent recommendation. Or at least make it so the libtards that want to define healthcare and welfare as national security issues are in the distinct minority. There is no other way. But it is solely for the US to decide.
It was Reagan who refused to trade with the USSR.
They’re not in my district. Plus, I am trapped behind the Cook County Curtain. We elect nothing but numb skulls.
I hope we are agreed on the importance of free trade to a nation’s prosperity and strength, though. Without it, we’d be Mexico.
We were not mexico before free trade. We would not be mexico if the WTO is shitcanned as it should be.
Were were not Mexico before free trade, and will not be Mexico if we leave the WTO, as we should.
I expect a poster to stop when shown they are pushing straw fears and just have a reasoned discussion.
Oh, and if I was trying to scare you, you would be scared. Stop with the nonsense.
So you live in an urban area in Mexico with dangerous people around, well I warned you.
I'll now look for "my" embargo of Mexican trucks that you fantasized up for me.
Sorry I'm not interested in responding to your hyper emotional parables.
Take a break and get back to me.
: > )
We were worse than Mexico before free trade. We were a colony, but those Puritans really could smuggle. They even thought it honorable. They viewed the right to trade as a natural right and the product of their labor as their very own.
They’d been just about not taxed at all and the black market for goods was a thriving one that irked Great Britain to no end.
The British were mercantilists back then. They hated free trade and this mistake lost them the entire US.
Why do you think the WTO is free trade?
That is a creative smiley face. I use this one ;-] It is a wink and a grin at the same time.
I don’t live in Mexico and you can’t scare me. I mean it.
I’ve got the facts and logic on my side. Plus I am physically strong, morally straight, I can shoot a gold tooth out of your mouth at 3000 yards (there would be some collateral damage, though), I can read minds, too.
I know you might think I wouldn’t talk to you this way if we were face to face, but you can ask my spouse. I do it all the time. I got into a fist fight with Steve McMichael and I called Schwarzenegger little to his face.
I have Jack Russel Terrier syndrome. No one bullies me. ;-]
I was referring to modern times, or at least post revolution when we became the United States. Mexico became a nation decades later.
WTO is not free trade. It is trade managed by unelected globalist bureaucrats. We should have nothing to do with them.
Russia had little to offer the US and could afford little of what we had to sell them. It was not an environment friendly to industry so no one was clamoring to set up shop there.
We did however, hammmer Toshiba, a japanese firm, for selling them high technology. I like John Wayne trade negotiations. You sound like Alan Alda.
Good thing we don't have to do anything they tell us to do then. We can leave the WTO anytime we choose. We can ignore any of their rulings. We haven't lost our sovereignty to them.
