First, I was being purposely hyperbolic. Not about building the fence, but about cutting off all trade

Uh, huh. And it only took how many posts for you to make that claim?

2nd, it was you who brought up oil as a good example not to cut off trade.

No, oil was used as an example for why we have a current account deficit with Mexico. That's all.

3rd, if we refuse mexican oil (or the Saudis oil for that matter), I suggest we replace it with domestic production. This would create far more jobs than would be lost in the oil sector, a sector that pays well, even in ol Mejico.

No argument from me on that one. Now that you can admit that cutting off all trade with Mexico wouldn't stop illegal immigration we can move on to other things.

4th, the fact is mexico benefits far more from trade with us than we do with them

You're going to have a hard time proving that but go ahead and make your case. There is no one putting a gun to anyone's head to make these trades. Both parties are acting in their own self interest. How that fact benefits one over another remains to be seen.

then maybe we’ll just have to make our refrigerators, computer parts, and car components here in the USA.

And we can forget everything we've learned about comparative advantage and being embracing everything in the state, nothing outside the state and nothing against the state. Now where have I heard that before.....

It was Reagan who refused to trade with the USSR.
