Europe Hedges on Guantánamo Detainees
NY Times ^ | March 16, 2009 | Glaberson and Erlanger

Posted on 03/15/2009 5:06:55 PM PDT by Sergeant Tim

A senior State Department official conceded that there were some concerns in Europe about accepting Guantánamo detainees. But the official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not designated to speak publicly on the issue, argued: “It is really just a small effort to help us deal with a legacy of the past. This is something we inherited, too.”

Among the host of questions, European officials said, was whether the former prisoners would need to be monitored, whether they would have full travel rights in Europe and whether detainees might entangle their countries’ courts in years of legal battles by suing former American officials for their imprisonment and treatment.

Obama administration officials are working on a two-pronged plan to close the prison. They are analyzing how many detainees might be tried, most likely in the United States, and working toward transferring scores of the others.

The Bush administration often failed when it asked other countries to accept detainees, partly because those requests were usually accompanied by public comments defending the imprisonments by describing the detainees as dangerous terrorists.

The new administration is sending a different message. “We are less vested in trying to prove that these people are rightly held,” the senior State Department official said [emphasis added mine].

Given that stance by the Obama administration, some European officials say Washington’s focus on sending the detainees to Europe raises many questions.

Germany’s interior minister, Wolfgang Schauble, has suggested publicly that if Guantánamo detainees pose no security risk, there is no reason the United States should not take them [emphasis added mine].

“We should know what is being asked of us,” said Pekka Lintu, Finland’s ambassador in Washington.

No, dirt .. Mr or Mrs Official, you won them in an American election; now go and tell the Europeans the truth about the violents jihadists at Gitmo so they can knowingly decide whether to let those killers run around loose among their citizens or not.

I’ll still call them enemy combatants.

The dirty little secret about all the detainees at Guantanamo is that they are all evil men. Europe and the Dems made a lot of Hay acting like they were shop keepers swooped up by Nazi like thugs but, that was always politics.

No sane government would want these men loose in their country. Can you blame them? It’s just a matter of time before one of them does something really (headline grabbing) serious and then Obama and the Dems will have a real icky feeling and a pissed off populous to deal with.

In an even longer view point, some sort of special forces type guys most likely scooped up most of these men to begin with. In the future, these bad men will likely simply be ‘killed’ resisting capture...because apparently the Western world can’t stomach places like Gitmo.

The irony here is that it will be done under the leadership of the Dems and the Obama. We shouldn’t be surprised. Most social problems are caused by the Dems in another ironic twist. Folks still love them, though, because they ‘care.’ Politics is a strange cauldron.

Right, if the US hadn’t picked them up and arrested them, they’d be loose on the streets of London Paris, Madrid, Berlin, Rome, etc. for the past 7 years.

They should all be flown half way to their country of birth then shoved out the door at 30,000 feet. Let Allah get them the rest of the way home or let them meet their virgins...either way I don’t care.

Is this not amazing?!

These Euroweenies, who our taxes built up and protected from Communism for 46 years after WW2, who haven’t even sent combat troop to the WOT, and who were actively involved in the Food for Oil scam behind our backs, and who criticised us relentlessly about Abu Ghraib and Gitmo, now cannot lift a GD finger to help out.

And we worry about their approbation?

I would bet that he will put them in a “Red” state, somewhere out west probably. And then watch the ACLU pukes fly in like locusts to “defend” the monsters.....

My top choice is still Shemya AFB, Alaska

They'll be begging to go back to Gitmo.

Our congress critters held still for this change in policy, right. So why don't we divide the scumbags in Gitmo between them so each has a few. Provide food and living quarters for them just like Gitmo. After all, they know what is best for us.

Good synopsis of Europe's role in the WOT, but the perfect solution is to leave them in Guantanamo, because the world will be at risk if they are let loose.

0 wanted a campaign issue and now he has given the GOP an even bigger one.
