WASHINGTON: Chas Freeman’s withdrawal was far more newsworthy than his initial appointment

WHEN FORMER ambassador Chas Freeman was picked last month to chair the National Intelligence Council (NIC), which prepares intelligence evaluations for the White House, few US newspapers reported the appointment. Freeman’s withdrawal this week was front page news, however, not least because of his blistering parting volley at the “Israel Lobby” he claimed had brought him down.

It should read: “candidate has tantrum”.

It is NOT “blistering” because the complaint has no basis in fact.

Just because it is emotional doesn’t give it substance.

Does anyone understand the final paragraph of this columnist’s story?
The grasping Irish don’t like Israel. They do a lot of business with the Arabs—everything from agricultural exports, to race horses, to engineering contracts. Israel is only a tiny market and , at any rate, doesn’t need Irish stuff. It is as simple as that.

Only a fool would have appointed Freeman. And while he'd have been pleased to screen intelligence for the President of the United States, in his rejection, Freeman scores points for his sponsors.
