WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senators from two Northeast states urged U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu to commit $400 million from the economic stimulus package to support an advanced wind energy program, especially for offshore wind projects.
The lawmakers want money budgeted for the department's energy efficiency and renewable energy activities set aside for developing domestic wind energy technologies so the United States can be compete with foreign wind companies.
. . . . .
The letter was sent by Maine Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins and Delaware Senators Tom Carper and Ted Kaufman.

"The federal government has to subsidize windmill production through production tax credits of about 1.8¢ per kilowatt. Wind Farms also receive an accelerated depreciation. Wind farms are also land intensive. They produce a fraction of the energy of a traditional power plant but they require 100 times the acreage.
From the National Center for Policy Analysis: to produce a 1000 megawatt power plant a wind farm would require 192,000 acres or 300 square miles. A nuclear plant would need about 1700 acres (or 2.65 mi2), and about 3 mi2 for a coal fired power plant. The transmission lines for the wind turbines would be massive, 12,000 miles just for the array."
These people are smoking crack
$400 million for Congress, for themselves?
I doubt that will cover the cost of environmental and activist lawsuits.
NH is already going through similar problems with a wind company trying to place windmills in it’s northern sector.
Congress doesn’t need to spend any more of the country’s time or money on wind. Those windbags need to be deflated.
As long as the Maine Bobbsey Twins and their Commie ‘RAT comrades build their wind farms on THEIR property and out of sight of us normal people, they can go for it.
Where in Sam Hill are they going to build them. In the water I suppose becuase when you think of wind energy the North Woods isn’t’ what comes to mind.
I can’t say what I think about these people.
Marching on Washington isn’t enough. We need to march in there and take back the Capital.
How 'bout the western mountains? I hear Mt. Washington (I know it's in NH) gets a stiff breeze.
If they want them so bad they can come down here to Texas and take em all. I am sick of looking at the damn things.
GE Energy has it’s windmill manufacturing plant in Bangor Maine. It is one of the largest employers in the region. Snowe and Collins are good foot servants for their masters.
Actually the town of Hull Mass is thinking of building more of them out in the water 2 miles offshore. The town already has 2 windmills , one at the high school and the other at the town dump.
The Boston area is one of the windiest parts of the country and if wind power will work it certainly will work in this area. - tom
Defeat Snowe and Collins.
Do not shop at LLbean.
Bangor? So we are going to build them in the middle of the Penobscot. It’s really woodsy and hilly even around GE.
>> especially for offshore wind projects
...except not offshore of Martha’s Vineyard. Or in any other leftist elite back yard.
effing hypocrites
We will have to build in the water. Flat land just isn’t in big supply up here. Maybe that’s why folks from away are called flat landers.
Every wind farm project will now return to regulatory review. Which means almost no new wind farms in the forseeable future before midterm elections.

Obama Begins Regulatory Reform
President Barack Obama took two steps toward reforming the way federal agencies develop public protections. On Jan. 30, the president issued a memorandum to the heads of executive departments and agencies asking for recommendations to help develop a new regulatory executive order. The same day, he issued an executive order overturning two Bush-era executive orders that changed the way regulations were developed.
