A prominent New York attorney has withdrawn from consideration for the No. 2 job at the Treasury Department, the second person to drop out of the running for the post, a Democratic source said Thursday.
The Democratic source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because it involved personnel matters, said that H. Rodgin Cohen had asked to have his name removed from consideration for the job of deputy Treasury secretary.

Wow, this is funny.
>> Taxes, nanny problems or a sex scandal? Who’s taking bets?
Why would it be an either/or situation? :-)
On another note: I hear a guy named Madoff is looking for work.
Who wants to work for the outfit that is wrecking the world economy?
Worrying to me. Like there’s something that the Obama administration isn’t telling us.
Rat jumping from a sinking ship!
LLS
Saw the real numbers and bailed?
Oh, that's right. It only applies to Republicans.
Nope. He's looking for a boyfriend.
Would you want your name next to Obama’s in the history books?
Any, all or none.
The issue is the fataly poor judgement on the part of The One when it comes to his associations. And it's not going away.
Of course 0bama has shown tremendously poor judgment with regard to appointments, but I don’t think this is an example. I have some familiarity with the NY legal scene, and I’ve NEVER heard any rumors/suspicions of impropriety about Rodge Cohen. I think this has more to do with Cohen not wanting to be associated with 0bama’s economic failure than it does with any failure in the vetting process or anything negative about this particular nominee.
I know nothing about him, but am glad to accept that explanation. However that also goes directly to Obama's judgement. If he didn't know Cohen was on board, why did he nominate him? I didn't mean to suggest that any and everyone he nominates, certainly not Cohen who I know nothing about, is a terrorist or racist, or that he shares their views when his associates are, rather to reflect on his judgement in making these decisions. He's the President of the United States, he should know up front that anyone he actually nominates is willing to serve.
From the article:
Cohen, a partner with the New York law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, had been considered a leading candidate for the post as Geithner’s deputy. The withdrawal was first reported by ABC News, which quoted sources as saying Cohen decided to take his name out of the running after an issue arose in the vetting process.
Thanks for the info (I’m freeping from a blackberry, so I’ve only been skimming articles). I’m still not sure this shows any problems in the vetting process - rather, it seems that, in this case (and likely only in this particular case), the vetting process worked as intended. There was an isssue, the vetting process caught it, and the potential nominee withdrew. Better now than after he was nominated or (worse) after he was confirmed...
If you mean funny = scary, yes. What on earth is going on?
BTW, it’s probably better for all of us if he stays where he is. We need his taxes.
bet your bottom dollar (which is all Obama plans on leaving you with...) that there isn’t a high profile Democrat in America who could pass an actual thorough audit by the IRS (you know, ‘Do you have a receipt for that expense, sir??’ kind of audit).
I’ve been through those kind of audits before and beaten back the beast which is the IRS. But I had to send one incredibly obnoxious and insanely annoying person there to represent me so that I did not utter some self-incriminating or slanderous statement to the auditors.
I figured that if they were jerks that I would send a bigger jerk to deal with them and make it as uncomfortable for them as they were trying to make it for me. After three consecutive years of their harassment, I gave them $500 to go away and they essentially ‘sued for peace’ and left me alone.
I would agree that Rodge’s reputation is sterling...as far as we know about his public face. However, I have a niggling suspicion that the issue(s) that might have arisen during the vetting process might well have to do with some of the banking and structured finance deals in which S&C has been a major player. S&C has long been a go-to firm for complex transactional work, ever since cobbling US Steel together early last century. The vast majority of troubled financial institutions have sought Rodge’s counsel, and S&C has performed substantive work for virtually every financial and banking institution world-wide. It’s entirely possible that this administration realised that the glare of publicity focussed on Rodge, and by extension S&C, metaphorically might reveal where a LOT of bodies are buried in the wreckage of the world economy.
