Expert Tom Diaz says that imports of certain semiautomatic rifles were regulated under the first Bush and Clinton administrations. But he told a House panel Wednesday the import rules were relaxed under the most recent Bush administration.

So the machine guns, grenades and RPG’s the Mexican drug lords are using come from American gun shows? Not that I have seen. Would somebody please tell me a gun show where I can legally buy an RPG? An RPG would be a real hoot at the gun range. “Hey guys, watch THIS!”

...currently illegal drugs...I keep saying this over and over and folks still don't get it...There are
no illegal drugs. There are controlled substances.
If you read the
Controlled Substance Act (you'll note that it isn't called the Illegal Drugs Act) you'll find that
actions taken with controlled substances are what carry penalties.
Controlled Substances Act PART D - OFFENSES AND PENALTIES(a) Unlawful acts
Except as authorized by this subchapter, it shall be unlawful for any person knowingly or intentionally -
(1) to manufacture, distribute, or dispense, or possess with intent to manufacture, distribute, or dispense, a controlled substance; or
(2) to create, distribute, or dispense, or possess with intent to distribute or dispense, a counterfeit substance. That is the "meat and potatoes" of the issue.
It is necessary to realize that the government enacted a workaround provision to do what they did. There should have been a Constitutional amendment, just like the 18th, yet this "Act" was enacted into law to allow the government to act under color of law.
Since Congress knew that there would be resistance to such an amendment they went the route that they did. They didn't "prohibit" anything, they just controlled the actions of Americans. And that should give everyone pause. For if one "act" can be penalized then any "act" could potentially be penalized, even an act guaranteed by the Constitution. And if someone might think to say that no such thing is possible I give you...gun control.

A side note...
§ 802. Definitions.
(6) The term ''controlled substance'' means a drug or other substance, or immediate precursor, included in schedule I, II, III, IV, or V of part B of this subchapter. The term does not include distilled spirits, wine, malt beverages, or tobacco, as those terms are defined or used in subtitle E of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986.By this definition any number of things could be deemed a "substance", as there is no definition of "substance", and actions taken with that substance would fall under this Act and warrant a penalty.

And one last thing. Do you think the UN had anything to do with the implementation of the Controlled Substance Act? Most people, in their ignorance, would say...NO.
Well, they're
wrong!
The Congress makes the following findings and declarations:
(7) The United States is a party to the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, 1961, and other international conventions designed to establish effective control over international and domestic traffic in controlled substances.Yes, Mr. and Mrs. America, all of these "drug problems" are brought to you by none other that the meddling, sovereignty stealing bureaucrats of the UN.
They've been helping you since 1961!

(5) The term ''control'' means to add a drug or other substance, or immediate precursor, to a schedule under part B of this subchapter, whether by transfer from another schedule or otherwise.

PART B - § 811 (a)
Except as provided in subsections (d) and (e) of this section, the Attorney General may by rule -
(1) add to such a schedule or transfer between such schedules any drug or other substance if he -
(A) finds that such drug or other substance has a potential for abuse, and I'm sure liberals can think of lots of "substances" that can potentially be abused...like gunpowder.
United Nations International Study on Firearm Regulation
Incidents involving firearm abuse continue to be an issue of international concern.

Tom Diaz, anti-gunner of the Violence Policy Institute? It's the Violence Policy Center.
But yes, that's the dude. Ex staffer for Chuckles the Cereal Killer.
They, along with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, Freedom States Alliance, Legal Community Against Violence, and States United to Prevent Gun Violence didn't take long to start dancing in the blood of the Alabama tragedy and calling for "the U.S. Congress to pass a federal assault weapons ban modeled on Californias effective law that would ban these weapons once and for all.
(Except for criminals who would buy smuggled in full auto AKs).
Man, I hope my AR kit, I've already got the stripped lower, arrives before the ban. Ditto the ammo and back up sights, I also have on order. Ammo is promissed to be shipped next week. Now I wish I'd ordered twice as much.

Thank you for that clarification. The opposition has controlled the terminology for so long that it's understandable why so many are so confused.
As for adding things as a substance to the listings, think of how normally rational people have been persuaded to believe that a fetus isn't a human being and is simply a blob of tissue.
Nobody should discount anything as impossible.

I’m almost done with my third AR build.
Ammo has gone through the roof.
I thought I was safe, since I’ve been reloading 5.56mm for nearly 20 years, but components are expensive and almost impossible to find. I’ve got around 5K of factory ammo in storage, but even that isn’t enough.

Nobody should discount anything as impossible. True, that. I still grate at "assault weapon" when not referring to a select fire military arm, and still, the phrase is virtually meaningless. We do ourselves a great disservice when we allow those who are apparently ignorant of firearms to frame the debate for the more knowledgeable, and unfortunately, catchy 'sound byte' phraseology dominates discussions which would be better served by an absence of inflamatory rhetoric, regardless of topic.
The widespread ignorance of 'conventional wisdom' would never survive without the buzzwords, nor would the purveyors thereof.
Now, as substances go, consider dihydrogen monoxide. That stuff is incredibly addictive. They start children at birth (actually, in the womb! because their parents are addicted), and while a few overdose, most simply cannot quit. Withdrawal symptoms appear to be universally lethal...(I know, don't get them started...)

Now, as substances go, consider dihydrogen monoxide. That stuff is incredibly addictive.True enough. But if you want even more incredibly addictive you have to go to ethanol dihydrogen monoxide. Either through solidification or liquefaction, you've got a real monster there if it isn't properly regulated by the individual.
