Homeschoolers Ordered into Public Classrooms ( It begins... )

A North Carolina judge has ordered three children to attend public schools this fall because the homeschooling their mother has provided over the last four years needs to be "challenged."

The children, however, have tested above their grade levels – by as much as two years.

The decision is raising eyebrows among homeschooling families, and one friend of the mother has launched a website to publicize the issue.

The ruling was made by Judge Ned Mangum of Wake County, who was handling a divorce proceeding for Thomas and Venessa Mills.

“Homeschool supporters and pro-family advocates spent today praising a California court ruling that affirmed the right of parents to direct their children’s education.

The upbeat reaction was triggered by the decision announced early today by the 2nd Appellate District in Los Angeles that affirmed the right of California parents to homeschool.

The opinion said state law permits homeschooling “as a species of private school education” but that statutory permission for parents to teach their own children could be “overridden in order to protect the safety of a child who has been declared dependent.”

The long-awaited decision resolves many questions that had developed in homeschooling circles across the nation when the same court earlier found that parents had no such rights – statutorily or constitutionally – in California.”

Of course not. If they can read and right, they would be able to think for themselves. The Dems can’t have this and stay in office long.

I also read that zero was supportive of charter schools. I dont trust him in that I think he wants more government control of charter schools.

None of my kids charter school teachers belong to a union and we like it very much thank you.

The courts love to stick it to homeschoolers whenever there is a custody dispute or if a non-custodial parent wants to make it difficult for the homeschooling parent. I have 2 aquaintances who have dealt with this type of thing. One eventually put her son in private school because she was afraid she would eventually lose him.

They are absolutely not going to let anyone out of the Gulags they've transformed Public Schools into.

The large majority of Public Schools are completely dysfunctional. Probably the best, but by no means the only, example of this is the Detroit Public Schools. They are, despite record levels of per/student funding, over 500 Million in debt, have a high school graduation rate of about 25% and, of those who actually attend and graduate from this Hell Hole, have scores that are at the bottom of the barrel.

Forcing anyone who has ANY other alternative to attend Schools like this is tantamount to a prison sentence and one that will follow them for the rest of their lives.

Judge Mangum has been on the bench for only 2 months after spending a decade as asst. county prosecutor. Perhaps he will reconsider before issuing his written opinion. It seems like a boneheaded thing for a judge to do.

Based on my reading of the article, the homeschooling is a side issue. This is a domestic case. Dad and mom both have strong feelings and it (sadly) went to court. Dad won. The judge's role here is to determine the best interest of the child. Whether he has it or not is up to debate, but it's then both mom and dad's job to convince the judge. Unfortunately, she lost.

I don't put this in the same category of the NEA affiliate of your town trying to ban homeschooling. That's a whole separate matter.
