The Bugle Sounded: Catholics Defend the Church in Hartford
Catholic Online ^ | 3/12/09 | Deacon Keith Fournier

They came because their Bishops stood strong. The bugle sounded a clear note. St Paul wrote to the Corinthian Christians, “And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle?” (1 Cor. 14:8) Well, this time the Bugle sounded clearly and the Bishops can take the credit.

The Bill was withdrawn from active consideration by Tom Gallagher, one of its proponents earlier this week. He is backpedaling now, attempting to rewrite history and claim that he only meant the best in this effort to create a different Church through utilizing the power of the State. However, the facts speak for themselves. This legislation was clearly unconstitutional.

Some State leaders who opposed the legislation called for an informal hearing when they realized that the faithful were coming, en masse, to the Capitol, even after the measure was tabled. The Bishops asked the faithful to come and they climbed on busses and showed up over 4,000 strong. They were there to defend the Church.

The Catholic Church is the greatest threat to those who support the intentional killing of children in the womb as a “right” and hope to undermine the primacy of authentic marriage. The positions of the Catholic Church on these issues are unequivocal and they are moral positions.

The Bishops asked the faithful to come and they climbed on busses and showed up over 4,000 strong.

One report estimated the crowd size at 7,000.

They were there to defend the Church.

I kept hearing this wasn't just a freedom of religion issue but an issue about 1st Amendment rights in general. I hope this is what they were defending instead of focusing specifically on religion.

As strident as The Church has been on abortion, they need to be even more so. We need Righteous Anger.

This is dead on arrival. They should impeach both the people who attempted to get this thing passed.

This legislation violated the Establishment Clause, the Free Exercise Clause and the Free Speech clauses of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

This wasn't intended as an affront to Catholics or their church, it was originally intended as a mechanism to keep crooked priests from looting the collection plate. Yes, it was overreaching, but it was not trying to silence Catholic voices.

Now that it's failed, I guess its up to Catholics in Connecticut to figure out how to keep the contributions where they belong, since they've convinced the state to butt out.

***Is there no end to the gall of these leftists???? ***

Not since a Marxist president got elected, and they feel free to attack the Catholic church. It will spread to all Christian churches.

The real question here is what 4th-rate diploma-mill did these two state Reps. graduate from?

Even a high school civics student could see the problems inherent in the this proposed bill.

***This wasn’t intended as an affront to Catholics or their church,...***

The bill sought to make the parish committees who would have handled the money into corporations, and you know that Obama is raising taxes on corporations. This bill was an attempt to tax all Christian churches. It was only the first of what will be many attempts to put down religion.

Minus, I think we both know that this was an attempt to control the bishops and priests.

My priest and I were chatting about this bill after Novena and Scripture study last night.

Like my priest always says I love ya all dearly, but I ain;t goint to hell for ya.

If you are doing something wrong I am obligated to tell you about it. If you want to hear about it or not.

I agree. I am not a Catholic. I was just shocked to see a piece of legislation basically saying how a religious body (or any group of peaceful and like-minded people) could behave. That’s not American.

Ever heard of a tax-exempt corporation? There are tens of thousands of them, none of their proceeds gets taxed. The CT legislature was not trying to help Obama grab money.

I’m no Catholic - but I applaud the support and muster of the Catholics in the face of this frightening piece of legislation.

Both of the people who pushed this bill are gay activist who are ticked off at the Catholic Church for their stand on the marriage issue.

This is nothing more that a secular attack on religion.

Totally unconstitutional and an affront to people of all faiths.

I want the photos of these two guys posted everywhere, they need to be held to account for even proposing it. Everyone needs to be held accountable -elected officials especially so, and when they have a fundamental lack of understanding of the constitution, freedom of religion, and why this country even exists they need to be spit on by every person that they encounter. No civility for the evil.

Did these legislators present any evidence that priests were 'looting' the collection plate? I doubt it, because Dioceses nowadays have safeguards in place, and just about every Parish has a Finance Committee that handles the money brought in from collections.

Both of these legislators are homosexual, and I think are active in the attempt to legalize homosexual 'marriage' in CT. The Catholic Church is the largest organized opponent, and as such, it needs to be weakened. I believe this was an attempt to do just that.

No, that was the stupid cover story, which you seem to have bought right into.

The sponsors of the bill were two openly homosexual legislators who were p.o.'d at the Church for supporting traditional marriage and opposing abortion. The local gay paper admitted as much in an online article that was later scrubbed.

These two Church-hating sneaks hooked up with the anti-Catholic organization Voice of the Faithful. VOTF has been trying for years to get control of the Church away from the clergy and the Pope, and into the hands of the laity so that they can then pack the new church corporations with liberal anti-Catholics and turn the Church into the Episcopal Church (and we see how well THAT has worked out - I used to be an Episcopalian). They needed an excuse to propose this insane law, and ONE guy who stole money was supposedly the reason why the entire administrative structure of ONLY ONE denomination would be completely gutted and redone at the State's command?

Talk about overkill! The priest who ripped off his parish has already been convicted and sent to prison. In other words, the existing laws worked. This new law would have done nothing about theft from parishes -- it would have just put the money into the hands of VOTF and their friends. Who would have destroyed the Church and made it into just another mainline liberal pro-abortion, pro-homosexual political action committee.

This wasn't about one thieving priest -- this was a revenge attack on the Catholics, pure and simple. Nobody's proposed that the State rework any other denomination, and I doubt that ANY church can honestly say it hasn't had a minister or two with his hand in the collection plate. My former Episcopal parish had a priest who was fired for stealing a large sum of money from the parish -- I'm talking major bequests and gifts, not change from the poor box.
