SARAH Palin's teenage Bristol has broken off her engagement to Levi Johnston two months after the birth of their child.
The 18-year-old daughter of the Alaskan Governor told the Associated Press (AP) she was "devastated" by the split.
"Unfortunately, my family has seen many people say and do many things to 'cash in' on the Palin name," she said in a statement.
"Sometimes that greed clouds good judgment and the truth."
Mr Johnston, 19, told AP the pair had mutually decided to end their relationship.
Bristol Palin's pregnancy was announced last summer days after her mother was named John McCain's running mate on the Republican presidential ticket.

Exactly. Young women need to keep their legs crossed. I feel badly for them but they brought it on themselves.
This doesn't have diddly to do with labor.
If Johnstons doper mother is an indication of his side of the equation, theyre both better of without him.
Looks like living in Massachusetts has had its deleterious effects. The reality is that, while there are exceptions, children are better off even with abusive fathers than without them.
Well, prayers that the couple might re-think their decision,
for the sake of their baby, might be in order.

This is news? I kept wondering why the “wedding” was being held off even after this poor child was born. It was obvious (at least to me) that the whole notion of a wedding was for politics only. Bristol and Sarah have an illegitimate child to raise now. I know some will take offense to this but there you have it. At least mom and grandmom don’t need to go on welfare to raise him. As an Alaskan I see way too many teenage mothers without husbands so I really do appreciate not having the state subsidize this little guy.
I agree, and I predict we will be pilloried on this thread as Palin haters. Sadly, we are not allowed to follow our values —that people should not have children if they are not married—lest we be hailed as not conservatives (which is pretty ironic, I would have to say).
While I am sympathetic to the whole media frenzy and the hate that was poured on the Palin family... I must make one statement:
Keep it in your pants and it never becomes an issue...
And don’t anyone give me any junk about being self-righteous. It is a fact. And for those who say we can’t expect kids to not have sex... well, with that attitude, what do you expect them to do?
The good news for that baby is that there appears to be a very good family support system.
“The reality is that, while there are exceptions, children are better off even with abusive fathers than without them.”
Are you for real? Are you serious? Wow.
A dog, let alone a person is better off without abusive parental units.
Oh, and where I live has nothing to do with it. Having eyes and ears does.
Would that ALL young girls would take a hard look at the potential father of their child before they give him the opportunity to become that. This is not a finger pointed at Bristol in particular but at girls in general.
Amen, amen, amen!
Even a more damning condemnation of freepers who jump on the same train.
Who couldn’t see this coming?
Typical libs. It is like asking a fish what water feels like.
Libs are so steeped in hypocrisy they cannot distinguish the difference anymore.
You are absolutely right on that point!
I am probably lucky that I did not become a parent long before I was ready. If I could do it all over, I probably would wait until after I graduated from high school, but I am pretty sure I would not have been able to hold out a full semester at college.
I hope that all the available attention from the extended Palin clan helps that poor baby come out of this emotionally healthy. Having an 18 year-old unwed single mother is likely to mess that baby up long-term.
I’d be shocked she’d kept the baby first and foremost. And I’d give her credit for doing so.
