Couric Wins Cronkite Award for Palin Interview (for “defining moment in the '08 campaign.”)

Remember when Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin accused journalist Katie Couric of "exploiting" their disastrous exchange — the one in which Palin couldn’t name some of running mate John McCain’s policies? Couric’s work obviously paid off, because the 52-year-old today received the prestigious Walter Cronkite Award for the exchange. The Baltimore Sun elaborates:

"Couric, who weathered one of network TV’s most criticized anchor-desk launches when she took over from interim anchor Bob Schieffer, was named winner of the University of Southern California’s Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in TV Political Journalism for her focused and illuminating interviews with Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin. The award is given by the Lear Center in the School of Journalism.

"And then, Couric and CBS News withstood a withering attack from the right — angered by seeing their candidate so exposed."

No word on whether Palin plans on sending her congratulations, although we’re not holding our breath.

McCain and that hack his team assigned to Palin deserve honorable mention.

..it was unfair but if you can’t handle Katie Couric then you probably won’t be able to handle Putin or Achmedinijad.

Peter Kafka pointed to a report from Portfolio.com’s Jeff Bercovici who was told by Couric that she consulted with the Democrat opposition before ambushing Palin. Couric shed some light on her preparation for the interviews: Beforehand, she sought advice from former senator Sam Nunn and Council on Foreign Relations president Richard Haas. They told her to draw Palin out on her geopolitical worldview and urged her to let the governor speak at length without interrupting her. Maybe she should bring them along with her when she takes over at Meet the Press?” Kafka notes that the origin of this quote has since been pulled and is no longer available online.-- DakotaVoice.

True, one should be able to handle an interview from the Perky one; but the 'set up was in" with help from the opposition...which was to sway an election away from Palin. Objective reporting from a much longer interview was amiss; and cut and paste took over for the intended mockery to humiliate.

Seems a women is always another woman's worst nightmare.

Plus we know the relationship between Obama and the Annenbergs. This award was just a thank you from the Obama folks.

Here's a prediction. Sarah Palin won't ... run again for national office.

I hope you're wrong. Palin is one of the few people I can think of who would run for the right reason. Her motivation seemed to be that she could do the job well and we need her. That's a whole lot better than Obama/Clinton who just want power, and it's a lot better than "I guess it's my turn" McCain, who didn't seem to want it.

Absolutely right that Dirtbag helped put 40,000 names on that wall.

I was so impressed with Couric getting this award, that I immediately donated another $250 to SarahPAC. So, you see, the award wasn’t all bad.

Now we have a teleprompter addict in office courtesy of Axlerod? Press corps are left without interviews. Obama sure in H wouldn't debate Rush..a mere radio host. No one debates with Rush, for that matter face to face. I doubt Rush ever expected Obama to. Was just a saber rattling homie to homie call out! Would be different if Rush were a TV personality like Larry King or Barbara Walters or Katie Couric!

the mistake was thinking that any VP candidate, that most Americans never heard of before, could be ready for national exposure in just a few days.

“They told her to draw Palin out on her geopolitical worldview”

that’s what HW Bush did to Ferraro. Foreign policy is supposed to be our strength. I’m sure that if you picked any random freeper, they would be more well versed on foreign affairs than any journalist.

...a conservative or hands on "realist" with experience in running a business, rebuilding the financials of the Olympic Games etc. [ more than partners in a donut shop for a couple months in the Commiewealth of MA ]. Takes on tough issues that others shy from, savy, sincere, successful, dignified, ALREADY owns a dog, not a pupil of any self appointed political teachers. ....Wonder whom that would be?

Yep. Those MSM “interviews” (interrogations) of Palin jumped around like they’d been butchered and scotchtaped back together. I got dizzy watching them. (I didn’t actually watch “Katie’s” interrogation of Sarah, just a short bit of it.) Rude. She did this country no favors. (Sarah didn’t want to tell her she read “Country Woman” magazine for fear of ridicule.)

Foreign policy

“When was it in the past decade..or pick someone, whenever you have admired. And I mean actions over talk. “

Gen David Petraeus...
The GOP nominated McCain, who has extensive foreign policy experience despite his other faults. If you are willing to go back further in GOP history then I can add that Reagan, HW Bush and Dole also developed a thorough understanding of foreign affairs before they ran for president and we can say the same for other Republicans, such as Nixon, Goldwater and Eisenhower.

you can’t really run the govt like a business. If you do, you’ll be run over by Congress, the entrenched bureaucracy and the media. Also, since a good conservative knows that he can’t run the govt like a real business then the best govt is a small one with more services transferred to the private sector.

...the mistake was thinking that any VP candidate, that most Americans never heard of before, could be ready for national exposure in just a few days.

That is one-third of the truth of the matter.

The second third is that Chris was correct in his earlier post, our side has got to start insisting on live interviews only. The media IS the enemy, and allowing them to selectively edit any extensive pre-recorded interview is suicide.

The final third of the truth of this fiasco, one that many here refuse to acknowledge, is that Palin was set-up and sabotaged by her own McCain campaign handlers.

BTW, it was the financial crisis not the Couric interview, that was the defining moment in the past presidential campaign. And McCain blew it.

Exactly!
