The shooting started in a neighborhood in Samson, a town of about 3,000 about 15 miles north of the Florida border, just after 4 p.m. (5 p.m. ET) and ended 12 miles away at a manufacturing plant in Geneva, said Alabama state Sen. Harri Anne Smith, who represents Geneva County.
"He was shooting at just ordinary people going about their business," Smith told CNN, saying she had been briefed by state and local law enforcement.
The gunman was killed at the plant, though it remained unclear whether he shot himself or was shot by someone else. Smith said the wife and child of a Geneva County sheriff's deputy were killed in the shooting spree.
State police Cpl. Steve Jarrett told reporters that the shooter killed six adults and one child in three residences in Samson before heading down state highway 52, firing at least seven bullets into a state trooper car. The trooper sustained minor injuries from shattered glass.
The shooter then killed another person at Samson Pipe and Supply and then another at a service station -- both on highway 52, Jarrett said.
He ended up at the Reliable Metal Products plant in Geneva, where he fired a 30-round burst, injuring the town's police chief, authorities said.
"Then the subject entered the business. Within minutes, shots were heard ... Law enforcement officers found him dead," Jarrett said.
"There are believed to be additional people shot and wounded during these episodes," he said.

The gunman, and the wife and child of a sheriff’s deputy were among those killed.
A pox on all gun-control-freaks.
It’s too bad one of the bystanders didn’t have a gun.
The gunman had worked at Reliable Metal, said state Rep. Warren Beck, a Republican whose district includes Geneva.
“My secretary heard gunfire everywhere,” he said. “This is one of the most tragic events ever in Geneva County.”
State Sen. Harri Anne Smith, R-Slocomb, said some of those killed in Samson were sitting outside.
“He was just driving down the street shooting at people sitting on their porches,” she said. “A family was just sitting on the porch and they were shot.”
The police were also investigating a burned house in neighboring Coffee County where another body was found, officials said. They said they believed the events were related.
This is definitely a case of not enough guns. If someone in the 1st home , one of the 5, had a gun, then no one would have died, except the perp.
Interesting how Liberals can get everything bass ackwards.
If he had come into my yard, he wouldn't have made it into the house.
NOT ENOUGH GUNS.
You’re right nice Yankee Lady. Of course sometimes one can have a gun and be out shot or out guned. But armed bystanders or armed intended victims can create a lot of Murphy’s Law real fast for such a bad guy.
Bottom line is...We need to not only have a gun handy but be very good with it. We need to learn to quickly point shoot at close range and practice slow deliberate shooting at pistol targets placed out at fifty yards or more.
This whole episode is sickening.
I’m surprised we don’t know the weapon type by now.
With a 30-round burst, it must be an illegal machine gun. Would CNN lie?
The burned house belonged to the shooter’s mother. She was the first person killed.

OMG!
“He started in his mother’s house,” Preachers said. “Then he went to Samson and he killed his granny and granddaddy and aunt and uncle.”
Horrific story. Prayers for the families affected by this madman.
That's gotta be rhetorical.
“Would CNN lie?”
“where he fired an estimated 30 rounds from a semiautomatic weapon”
From the story on Yahoo..sounds more realistic, not a burst.
Likely more than one, hand gun, and semi auto rifle likely.
Thats just a guess.
The Brady’s and other gun control organisations will, of course try to exploit this to the maximum. They are already squealing with delight that those poor people had no way to defend themselves.
Let’s not forget the amount of people he could have killed, like the media preached to us about the Rev. being killed.
I have the answer for the Brady Bunch.
THIS IS A CASE OF NOT ENOUGH GUNS............. YOUR FAULT!

Check out the last line of the article: Guns are widely available for purchase in the United States, a country that prides itself on the right to own weapons for self defense and hunting.
Here it comes!
