Senate Passes Huge Spending Bill, Heads to Obama for Signature

WASHINGTON -- Congress on Tuesday cleared for President Obama's signature a $410 billion measure to fund the government, a measure denounced by most Republicans as an example of reckless spending.

The Senate approved the measure by voice after it cleared a key procedural hurdle by a 62-35 vote. Sixty votes were required to shut down debate.

Obama will sign the measure Wednesday, the White House said, but he will also announce steps aimed at curbing lawmakers' penchant for pet projects.

The $410 billion bill is chock-full of lawmakers' pet projects and significant increases in food aid for the poor, energy research and other programs. It was supposed to have been completed last fall.

The bill ran into an unexpected political hailstorm in Congress after Obama's spending-heavy economic stimulus bill and his 2010 budget plan forecasting a $1.8 trillion deficit for the current budget year. And Republicans seized on Obama's willingness to sign a bill packed with pet projects after he assailed them as a candidate.

"If it had not been for the stimulus and the budget proposal it might have been ... noncontroversial," said House GOP leader John Boehner of Ohio. "The stimulus bill riled an awful lot of people up. ... And then the budget proposal comes out."

Graham copied McCain’s vote.

I just now went to the Senate website and got the info about Lamar’s vote.

On another thread I didn’t recall seeing his name, at least not at the start of it.

Wonder what the excuse will be?

When even McCain and Graham vote no it’s hard to imagine.

Of course McCain has always been mostly hardnosed on spending...just one way he can CLAIM to be conservative, IMO.

Well, the Federal government is entirely out of control. They’re spending like this because they think that’s what the public wants. The outcome will be that the U.S. will no longer be the World’s greatest nation.

When I was a kid I remember a photo and I always wondered how it felt for people in 1930 Germany to pay a wheelbarrow full of marks for a loaf of bread, we soon may know.

When Obama signs this current bill he automatically becomes a liar.

Just one more lie, not his first broken promise.

This is an utter joke. Obama leads the way in talking one way and doing another.

And it seems the disease is now catching on. Only just today it was said this could not pass and now the votes are there in spades.

So besides over 8000 earmarks, 8% tagged on to spending as millions of Americans lose their jobs. And Congress and Obama go on spending like it’s the roaring 20s.

Disgusting.

And the Senate was supposed to be the deliberative body of statesmen, which would keep the dictatorial executive and spontaneous representatives in check. The Founders never in their wildest dreams could have envisioned the amounts of money that are being controlled, nor it’s leading to the corruption of the senate.
