Sea rise 'to exceed projections'
BBC News ^ | 3/10/09 | David Shukman

The global sea level looks set to rise far higher than forecast because of changes in the polar ice-sheets, a team of researchers has suggested.

Scientists at a climate change summit in Copenhagen said earlier UN estimates were too low and that sea levels could rise by a metre or more by 2100.

The projections did not include the potential impact of polar melting and ice breaking off, they added.

The implications for millions of people would be "severe", they warned.

Ten per cent of the world's population - about 600 million people - live in low-lying areas.

The UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), in its 2007 Fourth Assessment Report, had said that the maximum rise in sea level would be in the region of 59cm.

Professor Konrad Steffen from the University of Colorado, speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, highlighted new studies into ice loss in Greenland, showing it has accelerated over the last decade.

Professor Steffen, who has studied the Arctic ice for the past 35 years, told me: "I would predict sea level rise by 2100 in the order of one metre; it could be 1.2m or 0.9m.

"But it is one metre or more seeing the current change, which is up to three times more than the average predicted by the IPCC."

"It is a major change and it actually calls for action."

Dr John Church of the Centre for Australian Weather and Climate Research added: "The most recent research showed that sea level is rising by 3mm a year since 1993, a rate well above the 20th century average."

Ice flow

Professor Eric Rignot, a senior research scientist at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said that results gathered since the IPCC showed that melting and ice loss could not be overlooked.

Now how could a weather prediction 91 years in the future be off?

We've GOT to believe this stuff. Right?

1) I do not believe there will be any appreciable sea level rise. End of story.

2) If there is a rise, people have worked out that a canal could be dug from the Mediterranean Sea to the Quatar (sp?) Depression which would give Libya a lovely piece of additional ocean-front property and guarantee that the world-wide sea level would not change a bit.

This is TOTALLY a non-issue.

Most of the Canadian land mass is still rising — from having been pushed into the magma by a two-mile thick ice sheet; up to the beginning of the current warming phase (about 8,000 years ago).

Our entire central valley here in California was once an inland sea. And our mountains were covered by great glaciers. Global warming caused the glacier ice and the sea waters to recede leaving us our fertile valleys and wondrous place like Yosemite Valley.

Global warming is a wonderful thing. It isn’t man’s doings. God has a hand in it.

Based on past experience, I expect that sea level rise will accelerate as the planet gets hotter.
And based on temperature readings of the last TEN YEARS, the planet is getting COLDER.

So what does that do to this whole "story"?

That’s actually 85 years. It’s “rising” in mm not cm.

This is retarded. Even if the earth was warming-- the global warming movement presumes to know the exact perfect temperature of the planet earth. As if its cookie dough or something.

I mean, consider what they are saying: 80 degrees (or whatever number) good. 82 degrees bad. 78 degreed bad. Why?

Because 82 degrees supposedly causes an increase in hurricanes in location A. But...does it not then decrease hurricanes in location B? And so on. It's retarded.

Does all this mean that the peak of Mt. Everest is set to fall?

“That analysis is a bunch of Obama”

Bingo. It is much more likely that there will be a massive nuclear war, or an asteroid strike or a pandemic that will kill off billions by 2100. Sea rise 3 meters? Pftttt, these guys need to chill.

The BBC has to be just about the most biased “news” organizations on the face of the earth. From global warming to Hamas terrorism and all points in between the BBC consistently bends over backwards to promote a particular point of view. Its really a shame that everyone in the UK is forced to shell out 139.50 pounds a year on each set they own to support this garbage.

Exactly. Simple classroom experiment will demonstrate stupidity of the Polar ice Cap is melting and we're going to drown chicken littles. Float some ice cubes in a glass of water. Mark the level of the water. Let ice cubes melt. Mark the level of the water. What happened boys and girls?

Because sea level has already risen 50,000 miles in the last 10 years.

/sarcasm

They will still be spewing this nonsense as advancing glaciers scrape them off the south end of Manhattan Island.

Yet another example of how the media manipulates the news. Headline: “Sea rise ‘to exceed projections’” This is a declarative statement indicating that the greater than expected rise of sea levels will undoubtedly happen. However, it isn’t until you actually read the article where one discovers that this rise is merely the opinion of a small handful of scientists and represents nothing more than one possible outcome without specificaly mentioning the likelihood of such an outcome. This is yellow journalism of the worst kind. Editors at Pravda would have been uncomfortable printing this.

Well does it stay the same? I as not good at school and it was so long ago,
I do know that 70% of the planet is water so it is going to take more water than we have to really raise it!!

I know that anecdotal experiences do not make a case for global cooling but as I am writing this in Helena, Mt it is snowing and the outside air temperature is one degree above zero. Tonight the temp is forcast to be four below zero with wind chill forcast of minus 30-40. In other news, the sun is still free of sunspots. Maunder Minimum re-visited??? Thank goodness for engine block heaters.
