we found that there were two primary sources of all those black people of military age:..... People already in the U.S. Air Force at our two big strategic air bases and Grand Forks and Minot and, thus, ineligible to join.

Saw a newspaper article several years ago that interviewed black service members on duty in the Dakotas. They were depressed ..... too many white people, not enough black people off-base, no social opportunities, and overall a cloying atmosphere of ..... what to call it? "Cultural non-friendliness"? It wasn't that whites were all racist, you see ... it's just that they were so .... well ..... they weren't .... they just weren't ......

Contrast that with the ambience of Eddie Murphy's Boomerang a few years ago, about a successful black businessman (who didn't spend much time in the office but somehow was attracting semi-mute People from France to come stand in his attractively-furnished office and drop big checks on his desk against no-sweat "deliverables") operating in Los Angeles.

I noticed distinct categories of portrayals of whites in Boomerang, which is about as close to laying it on the line as we're going to get a smart guy like Murphy to own to:

• Background -- middle distance, not in the action

• Self-caricatures with exaggerated speech and mannerisms (think Step 'N' Fetchit here), all in good fun (there was this waitress, see)

• Furniture

• People from France

• The largest category .... absent.

Man, they just weren't there. Guess that's what Day of Jubilee really looks like "in the round" -- and guys like Murph and Spike have just been too polite all these years to clue us in on the other part. Although Spike did drop a hint in Do the Right Thing, when Danny Aiello's pizza place went up in flames and Danny disappeared.
