U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn, Barack Obama form unlikely friendship [barf]
The Oklahoman, Oklahoma City, Okla. ^ | 2009-03-08

Since 2004, alliance has transcended political differences.

BY CHRIS CASTEEL

WASHINGTON — Some Oklahomans who saw Sen. Tom Coburn hug President Barack Obama after the president’s recent speech to Congress were probably perplexed. Some weren’t too happy about it.

"We had about 50 letters that were highly critical of him hugging me and me hugging him,” Coburn, R-Muskogee, said in an interview last week. "But you need to separate the difference in political philosophy versus friendship. How better to influence somebody than love them?

"I’m not aligned with him politically. I don’t know what people back home in Oklahoma would be worried about. I think I’m — if not the most conservative senator, I’m one of the most conservative senators.”

For some, the hugging scene on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives may have been the first hint that the two men — who wouldn’t seem to have much in common — even have a relationship. Coburn himself would admit that there are plenty of people in Washington who wouldn’t hug him — and that would be more than fine with him.

I believe that Sen. Coburn is being set up by Obama. Obama is betting that once the Republicans see a man like Coburn hugging Obama, they will think it is safe to let their guard down and compromise.

Senator Coburn is being used by Obama, imho. Obama couldn’t give a toss about him. It is all show.

That sounds a little gay to me. Just my opinion.

I would just as soon hug a rattlesnake myself. At least I would know where the fangs are.

Okie from Muskogee

Merle Haggard

We don’t smoke marijuana in Muskogee;
We don’t take our trips on LSD
We don’t burn our draft cards down on Main Street;
We like livin’ right, and bein’ free.

I’m proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,
A place where even squares can have a ball
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
And white lightnin’s still the biggest thrill of all

We don’t make a party out of lovin’;
We like holdin’ hands and pitchin’ woo;
We don’t let our hair grow long and shaggy,
Like the hippies out in San Francisco do.

And I’m proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,
A place where even squares can have a ball.
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
And white lightnin’s still the biggest thrill of all.

Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear;
Beads and Roman sandals won’t be seen.
Football’s still the roughest thing on campus,
And the kids here still respect the college dean.

We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
In Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA.

“.....him hugging me and me hugging him......How better to influence somebody than love them.”

Ahem. Born and raised in Nebraska, I thought that public displays of......affection between males was frowned on by Okies. Apparently, things have changed in Oklahoma, or perhaps the voters of the state knew what was best for Coburn and got him the Hell out of OK. Ya’ never know, it might have saved his life!

I’ll stipulate to the possibility that the Senator is working through some “personal issues”, I just wish he wouldn’t do it out in public like that. What’s next, patting the Pres on the butt? Wouldn’t have done that even with full pads when I played football at Nebraska. We now live in a state that actually touches Oklahoma. Hmmm...must remember to have a talk with the kids. I think I need to go take a shower now.

G’night.

As an Oklahoman, I think your observation is correct and would expand it to say I think this is the first symptom of "Potomac fever" that seems to affect all politicians at some point in their service. We will know Coburn is fully under the spell of "Potomac fever" when he repeats this performance with Ted Kennedy.

Hugging is part of 0bama’s con game. Why on earth allow it? Unless Coburn was told go along with 0 otherwise Oklahoma gets frozen out. I can see Rahm Emauelle making such threats

He’s already been had by Obama.

Google: “Obama Knew He Wasn’t Eligible For POTUS”

The cabal of Obama, Clinton, Menendez, McCaskill, Leahy, Coburn and McCain covered up McCain’s INELIGIBILITY as well as Obama’s back in FEBRUARY 2008.

Traitors all.

If Coburn is allowing himself to be used, then he isn’t as bright as I thought he was.

Almost all pols are knuckleheads, crooks, or both.

“These men (in government), in point of fact, are seldom if ever moved by anything rationally describable as public spirit; there is actually no more public spirit among them than among so many burglars or street-walkers.”
