Barack Obama's offhand approach to Gordon Brown's Washington visit last week came about because the president has facing exhaustion over America's economic crisis and is unable to focus on foreign affairs, the Sunday Telegraph has been told.
Sources close to the White House say Mr Obama and his staff have been "overwhelmed" by the economic meltdown and have voiced concerns that the new president is not getting enough rest.
British officials, meanwhile, admit that the White House and US State Department staff were utterly bemused by complaints that the Prime Minister should have been granted full-blown press conference and a formal dinner, as has been customary. They concede that Obama aides seemed unfamiliar with the expectations that surround a major visit by a British prime minister.
But Washington figures with access to Mr Obama's inner circle explained the slight by saying that those high up in the administration have had little time to deal with international matters, let alone the diplomatic niceties of the special relationship.
Allies of Mr Obama say his weary appearance in the Oval Office with Mr Brown illustrates the strain he is now under, and the president's surprise at the sheer volume of business that crosses his desk.
A well-connected Washington figure, who is close to members of Mr Obama's inner circle, expressed concern that Mr Obama had failed so far to "even fake an interest in foreign policy".
A British official conceded that the furore surrounding the apparent snub to Mr Brown had come as a shock to the White House. "I think it's right to say that their focus is elsewhere, on domestic affairs. A number of our US interlocutors said they couldn't quite understand the British concerns and didn't get what that was all about."

What a putz!

I don’t know what OJT means.
I suppose I should have ended my comment with /end extreme sarcasm
Jeeze.
I thought the dripping sarcasm in my comment would be blatantly obvious to all.
Thank you for your service
Yep. I responded in Post 484 to your comment on the open Forum where you are complaining that it is "a shame" that other FReepers consider this a worthwhile thread while you consider it a "piece of garbage".
It is a darn shame that a fine column written by Thomas Sowell and posted here in FR receives 30 replies and this piece of garbage tabloid article now has over 400, .... JustaDumbBlonde
When your opinions are challenged, you play the victim. Some sarcasm on your part is O.K. Some sarcasm on my part is "rude".
It's O.K. for you to complain that FReepers that had responded to this thread were flocking to "garbage" but, when the international importance of the thread is debated with you, you turn into a Drama Queen.
You say you don't want to discuss the issues of the thread with me any more so I say, "Fine. Then don't reply to me any more. And, if this thread is such 'a shame' and ' piece of garbage', there are dozens of other threads on FR that are probably to your liking."
Then, you reply to me AGAIN and get even more ballistic.
If you post on the FR open Forum, your views will be challenged.
If you can't tolerate your views being challenged, don't post in the open Forum.
That's the way political Forums on the Internet work.
If you get insulted because your views are challenged after "something that you said to someone else" then use FReep Mail. Then, the discussion will just between you and that other person and nobody else on the open Forum will challenge the opinions that you seems totally incapable of defending by means other than playing the victim and throwing a temper tantrum.
Done.
Thank you for your service and thank you to the rest of Great Britain.
Through the intoxication of the minds of the masses, both in America and, you must admit, Britain and the rest of Europe, Barack Obama has ridden a wave of irrational enthusiasm to become President of the United States.
The irrationality of the masses cannot be seen more clearly than in the fact that this man and this Administration does not realize that Great Britain and the United States have a special relationship like no other in the 20th and 21st Centuries.
If there is a Western Civilization today, it is in thanks not only to the Pax Americana but also to Britain's Finest Hour without which the Pax Americana would never have been possible.
And how many vacation days has this guy already taken? As I recall, more than any other president ever. If he can’t handle the stress and strain of the office, and the economic mess he created, then he should resign.
And the word "overwhelmed" was quoted, as if someone in the Obama admin was giving it as an excuse for their ineptness.
It was obvious to me.
Thank you for your service
I join you in thanking rumrat for his service.
My apologies to you, I had read a few threads and it seemed in a lot of them that the people in the States assume that we in this country endorsed Obama as our choice.
This is not true, the leadership may have ,but then again they would he is their opposite number in this country.
We are as fed up with Brown as you seem to be with the Kenyan. We all thought when he came to the states(Brown) they would MAU MAU MOWSEY on down to the coral and be big buddies. Just goes to show the old British adage is true..........You can take the man out the jungle .....but you cant take the jungle out of the man.
>>>”And that leaves Hillary. No problem, Bill will probably have her knocked off and try to assume office.”<<<
Actually, no, that leaves Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) `formerly’ of the Ku Klux Klan, as president: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_line_of_succession
Thank you for your service, FRiend!
That’s what friends do!
From the feed back I been getting on these threads I think the target for our next assault on enemies of our state’s should be the Press or at least the press that’s been working for the Kenyan man apparently most of the UK was behind him. I got to tell you most = Gordon’s Crew, and the rest of us were struggling to know who he was until a few days before his election.
We don’t vote in our own elections so why we should stick our shonks into yours is beyond me. Most Brits are so politically naive they think OBAMA is a STATE.
And its Monday now in the UK and bed time. All of you at NORAD keep your eyes peeled no nodding of whilst I’m asleep in my bed. Tell OBAMA to keep the noise down if its party night as I am tired I do actually do something. If he’s working late and his missus is at a loose end she can come around my house. But only if I get a Helicopter. I know Mombasa well so we can talk about the K boats or tusks. Obama might even do me a wood carving.
So unlike Vietnam I will say
GOOOOOOOD NIGHT AMERICA.
And Michelle, get rid of that damn Franklin bust.I need a place for my velvet MALCOLM X poster.I don’t care if it was a gift from King George to John Adams.I don’t care if it belongs to the American people and not me.Don’t bother with the welcome wagon. He can catch a cab.Allies, hell we still got Australia. This guy-what’s his name again-probably owned slaves two hudred years ago anyway.i got p-diddy comin’ fo lunch so cancel the rest of my day.what? Congress on the phone?Let the machine pick up,my teleprompter is in the other room.
