Barack Obama 'too tired' to give proper welcome to Gordon Brown
The London Telegraph ^ | March 7, 2009 | Tim Shipman

Posted on 03/07/2009 12:16:38 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Barack Obama's offhand approach to Gordon Brown's Washington visit last week came about because the president has facing exhaustion over America's economic crisis and is unable to focus on foreign affairs, the Sunday Telegraph has been told.

Sources close to the White House say Mr Obama and his staff have been "overwhelmed" by the economic meltdown and have voiced concerns that the new president is not getting enough rest.

British officials, meanwhile, admit that the White House and US State Department staff were utterly bemused by complaints that the Prime Minister should have been granted full-blown press conference and a formal dinner, as has been customary. They concede that Obama aides seemed unfamiliar with the expectations that surround a major visit by a British prime minister.

But Washington figures with access to Mr Obama's inner circle explained the slight by saying that those high up in the administration have had little time to deal with international matters, let alone the diplomatic niceties of the special relationship.

Allies of Mr Obama say his weary appearance in the Oval Office with Mr Brown illustrates the strain he is now under, and the president's surprise at the sheer volume of business that crosses his desk.

A well-connected Washington figure, who is close to members of Mr Obama's inner circle, expressed concern that Mr Obama had failed so far to "even fake an interest in foreign policy".

A British official conceded that the furore surrounding the apparent snub to Mr Brown had come as a shock to the White House. "I think it's right to say that their focus is elsewhere, on domestic affairs. A number of our US interlocutors said they couldn't quite understand the British concerns and didn't get what that was all about."

Biden has the advantage (a slight one, granted, but looming larger every minute) of being an American. And, like Slick Willie, he might be willing to dump his policies in exchange for the thanks of a relieved and grateful nation: "Paris vaut bien une messe," and all that.

Hell, once he's in office he might even pull a Becket and decide that the honor of the Constitution is worth more than the Left's adulation.

Since the media over here is not reporting this then I find it is my duty to report it myself! I just sent this off to everyone on my email list and will keep doing this. IF we all take an active interest in passing along articles such as this on Obama....word will get out....and How sweet it is that the British are reporting stories like this on our President......LOVE IT!!!

Agreed. Let them eat change.

I lived there between 1963 and 1973.

I was just across the Bay from you then. It's even weirder now.

LOL! You could have a lot of fun if you were the person writing the script into the things, too. 'Uhh...uhhh...'

The official dismissed any notion of the special relationship, saying: "There's nothing special about Britain. You're just the same as the other 190 countries in the world. You shouldn't expect special treatment." The apparent lack of attention to detail by the Obama administration is indicative of what many believe to be Mr Obama's determination to do too much too quickly.

Well that ought to bring our image back up in the world.

Last Fall, didn’t Biden predict there would be a terrorist attack on the U.S. within 6 months of Obama taking office? Can anyone imagine how much worse our economy would get if that happened? I hope Biden is wrong!!! At the same time I wonder how Obama would respond. Is he ready? Would he manage it as well as George W. Bush? Maybe now he appreciates that Bush did a good job under very severe conditions. Maybe someday historians will say that Bush was a great commander-in-chief.

Yes, once an addict always an addict. You may be a recovering addict, but once to take the first taste of your particular poison, it is as if you never stopped. Alcoholics call it “going out”.

“If a magic genie offered to have Bill Clinton replace Obama in the White House if I walked from Seattle to Miami, I would do it and I would kiss Bubba’s feet when I got there. “

Oh Dear God help me now, but I am in total agreement with you.

The "Hell, I miss Bill Clinton" Club is getting pretty crowded.

If Bill Clinton ever reads this Free Republic thread, he'll probably clutch his chest and keel over from a coronary over the shock about what we're saying about him.

For goodness sakes! No one was expecting “special” treatment for our allies; not from this package. However, there is protocol, just basic decency, that goes along with that job, and Mr. President should go back and look at tape of former Presidents and how they treated foreign dignitaries.

I hope she is “not at home”

LOL! That would be awesome! Hope she can pull it off.

She gave a luncheon for the Bushes when W was President.

I remember that and the State Dinner President Bush had when she visited the White House.

Ahhhhhh, Dose memories. ;*)
