Barack Obama's offhand approach to Gordon Brown's Washington visit last week came about because the president has facing exhaustion over America's economic crisis and is unable to focus on foreign affairs, the Sunday Telegraph has been told.
Sources close to the White House say Mr Obama and his staff have been "overwhelmed" by the economic meltdown and have voiced concerns that the new president is not getting enough rest.
British officials, meanwhile, admit that the White House and US State Department staff were utterly bemused by complaints that the Prime Minister should have been granted full-blown press conference and a formal dinner, as has been customary. They concede that Obama aides seemed unfamiliar with the expectations that surround a major visit by a British prime minister.
But Washington figures with access to Mr Obama's inner circle explained the slight by saying that those high up in the administration have had little time to deal with international matters, let alone the diplomatic niceties of the special relationship.
Allies of Mr Obama say his weary appearance in the Oval Office with Mr Brown illustrates the strain he is now under, and the president's surprise at the sheer volume of business that crosses his desk.
A well-connected Washington figure, who is close to members of Mr Obama's inner circle, expressed concern that Mr Obama had failed so far to "even fake an interest in foreign policy".
A British official conceded that the furore surrounding the apparent snub to Mr Brown had come as a shock to the White House. "I think it's right to say that their focus is elsewhere, on domestic affairs. A number of our US interlocutors said they couldn't quite understand the British concerns and didn't get what that was all about."

I have had those same feelings many times. Can you believe it?
Alien from outer space alert!!!
In other words, they don't know what they're doing.
They have no clue how to run the United States of America.
Peter Principle.
International diplomacy and affairs of state are "above his pay grade."
I’m showing my age here but I remember Tootle the Turtle and Mr. Wizard. It was a cartoon about a turtle who always wanted to be something else, usually glamorous or dangerous, like an astronaut or soldier or something. The obliging wizard would wave his wand and Tootle would become what he wanted, until he realized reality was a lot different from his imagination. At the point that he got into deep trouble in his new life, he would call out for help and Mr. Wizard would wave his wand again and bring him home with some catchphrase like “It’s better to be what you are than to be what you isn’t.” This is like Tootle as president.
Well, duh. Guess all your years of campaigning didn't quite prepare you for actually doing a job, huh?

He isn't interested in foreign policy, he wants only to trash America.
There was rarely a named source during the President George W. Bush years, but most here gave every lying despicable story credibility. Why change tactics now?
If you want to go back to eating waffles instead of speaking waffles then resign your post, 0slacker!
Dwight Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan were old, experienced men who had spent their entire adult careers learning how to delegate when they went to the White House. Each knew how to run a large organization through competent subordinates; hence, each was able to handle the job without appearing to break a sweat, much as an experienced high wire walker makes a very difficult, dangerous task look easy. Zero, a younger, fitter man has none of this experience and ability.
He doesn't know how he got there
Someone had to put him there
He doesn't belong there
Now that he is there, he doesn't know what to do next
(or something like that...) :-)
What makes you think he ever quit? ;*)
They point out that the president has agreed to meet the prime minister for further one-to-one talks in London later this month, ahead of the G20 summit on April 2.

Queen Elizabeth knows more about protocol than anyone else in the whole world. I hope she is “not at home” when The One decides to visit the UK.
I remember Hillary Clinton wearing her black pantsuit to meet the Queen. HRH Elizabeth gave her a cup of tea. She gave a luncheon for the Bushes when W was President.
Worth a thousand words
Lol, haven't read the thread but we all know Zero has had a number of ‘vacations’ already in his less than two months in office and every Wednesday night is PARTY HEARTY time at the White House!!
He needs more than a tele-prompter.
0bammy is the liberal's President. We'll leave it to liberals like you to check the sources.
They sell them at Cafe Press.com I just received the 48-pack of the lapel sticker. They also work as bumper stickers on lefty cars ;)
What would it take for the Democrat-controlled House and Senate to get that process started?
He won't be impeached. He will be ruled incapacitated and the VP will step in while he is under medical care (probably from the professionals at Betty Ford).
“...the president’s surprise at the sheer volume of business that crosses his desk.”
What the ‘ell did you think the job was going to be? 9-5 with weekends off?
This is not a Community Organization job where you work 40 hrs (maybe) & get fed holidays.
Grow the ‘ef up, you lazy piece of shite!
That is old thinking...back in 2008. His new "allies" are Iran, Syria and Hamas.
I would agree with you except we've seen with our own eyes the guy's a slacker. Has he spent one day since he was inaugurated actually doing any work? No! He's been doing photo ops, giving speeches and partying. He's signed legislation written by Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and executive orders written by Rahm Emmanuel. Just like in the Illinois Senate others did the work and he got the credit.
It would be easy to dismiss if there weren't evidence to suggest otherwise.
