Barack Obama's offhand approach to Gordon Brown's Washington visit last week came about because the president has facing exhaustion over America's economic crisis and is unable to focus on foreign affairs, the Sunday Telegraph has been told.
Sources close to the White House say Mr Obama and his staff have been "overwhelmed" by the economic meltdown and have voiced concerns that the new president is not getting enough rest.
British officials, meanwhile, admit that the White House and US State Department staff were utterly bemused by complaints that the Prime Minister should have been granted full-blown press conference and a formal dinner, as has been customary. They concede that Obama aides seemed unfamiliar with the expectations that surround a major visit by a British prime minister.
But Washington figures with access to Mr Obama's inner circle explained the slight by saying that those high up in the administration have had little time to deal with international matters, let alone the diplomatic niceties of the special relationship.
Allies of Mr Obama say his weary appearance in the Oval Office with Mr Brown illustrates the strain he is now under, and the president's surprise at the sheer volume of business that crosses his desk.
A well-connected Washington figure, who is close to members of Mr Obama's inner circle, expressed concern that Mr Obama had failed so far to "even fake an interest in foreign policy".
A British official conceded that the furore surrounding the apparent snub to Mr Brown had come as a shock to the White House. "I think it's right to say that their focus is elsewhere, on domestic affairs. A number of our US interlocutors said they couldn't quite understand the British concerns and didn't get what that was all about."

He’s also “too marxist” to be president.
“
Hell, I miss Bill Clinton!!!!!
I didn’t like Clinton, but he was a lot better then this p o s.
As far as I am concerned the USA is currently without a president “
The fact that people like that even exist is very disturbing.
You mean way over the stump of their necks.
They lost their heads a long time ago.
Fascinating. Did you ever read the book Silent Coup about the Nixon Administration and the Watergate “scandal”?
The official dismissed any notion of the special relationship, saying:"There's nothing special about Britain. You're just the same as the other 190 countries in the world. You shouldn't expect special treatment."....."
I wish the reporter had named the, "State Department official"!
Reagan did more work in his seventies than this punk can do at 47!
(Grin) Never been to Berkeley, California, have you? That’s pretty mild by their standards. :-)
Oh no, all you have to do is make kissey-face and the world will turn into a love fest!
Why do I feel oddly reassured by that?
Do not be deceived by the Alinsky-trained Marxist. Obama is as devious, ruthless and cunning as ever. He means to destroy America. Never forget that.
:)
You sure got that right. What an embarrassment he is. Also, if Mark Steyn is not lying to me, the PM took a great deal of care to choose thoughtful and very meaningful gifts for Zero, who promptly responded by giving the leader of one of our staunchest allies a set of American movies.
Seriously, I don't know and I don't want to find out. Biden is an arrogant prick. The difference is, because of his age and the fact he was in the Senate for 30 years, he thinks he is some sort of foreign policy expert. The reality is, they are both just as stupid & clueless as the other.
The phrase Dumb & Dumber keeps running through my head.
President Bush gave the first press conference three days after he was inaugurated
Press Conference with President George W. Bush and Education Secretary Rod Paige to Introduce the President’s Education Program

Amazing! The press just refused to accept reality with President Bush.
Thanks for the link. There is a photo of the whole East Room formal Presser! The top of the page has a bittersweet message: “This website is frozen in time...”
Yeah! And... none of Bush’s appointees had tax problems or second thoughts!
Those days are over, at least for the next 4 years. Our new allies, France, Germany, and soon to be Syria.
Let's send the new czar supplies so he doesn't request $1.2 Billion for the new department.
