(snip)...Christen's application included her membership in several charitable groups, including some from her past, but did not mention that she was on the board of Planned Parenthood in the mid-1990s. The organization, which didn't provide abortions in Alaska until 2003, is now on the opposite side of a Palin-supported bill to require girls under 17 to get parental consent for an abortion. (snip)

First I haven’t seen this posted. Second why is this only in bloggers (until now)? This is big conservative news. You did the right thing. “Bloggers” doesn’t cut it.
Just checked, Governor Murkowski tried to throw it back to the Judicial Council and he was rebuffed and was he had to go back to the original choices of the Judicial Council.. that is the law there.
well thats a stupid law then. they should change it.
I guess this judge would be like California and call the Constitution unconstitutional?
Even if she had asked, would they have obliged her? The Democrats hate her and the Alaskan GOP hates her too. A liberal judge is not going to send the name of a conservative jurist to a conservative governor. They will always send a liberal.
Dunno - why on’t you email them and ask? Nobody in the local (and liberal) news gruppo asked that.
I just that folks would find the appointment intersting - only the 2nd female Supreme in the entire history of the State.
The real question though isn’t the law, that is just one of those ‘is’ situations in this that the Governor must deal with..
The real question in my mind is why is this pro-life group who leveled these charges, promoting the more pro-abortion candidate Smith?
It’s hard to believe a card-carrying PP member is the better of two possible choices. Wow.
Nope, Murkowski tried before and they rebuffed and sent the same choices back..
Read the article, Planned Parenthood there wasn’t an abortion promoting organization in the State when she was on the board, it was almost a decade later before they became an abortion providing organization.
Too bad global warming isn’t real...if it was we could move up there without freezing for 1/2 the year.
A crooked system, wow, I wonder which party set that up back whenever it was set up?
well, i for sure felt that i was voting for the lesser of two losers this election...if Palin, however, runs for Prez i won’t feel that way...what about you?
Why did she only have 2 choices?
Nope, she is my first choice (and last too).
Just making a note on the record, a lot of interesting things where discovered earlier today by several FReepers and felt it important to post here to add to the discussion/research.
Basically, I run on the rule that if the MSM says it, it is probably false and to verify.. when I went to verify, I found a lot of fishy things going on around this story.
I read this on Conservatives4palin.com. She was following the Missouri Plan
This is an excerpt from a post on www.conservatives4palin.com:
Some commenters have wondered why Governor Palin did not ask the Alaska Judicial Council for a list containing more names. Unfortunately for Governor Palin, the Council does not and will not fulfill this request. Palin’s predecessor, Frank Murkowski, attempted this tactic but faced statewide embarrassment when the Council rejected his demand. The Council wields the most influence in this process. We do know that Governor Palin requested extensive information on both finalists, Morgan Christen and Eric Smith, and decided on Christen. It is clear that both candidates for the bench did not align with Governor Palin’s ideal judicial philosophies.
Under the Missouri Plan, Governor Palin was forced to choose between Christen and Smith. In my opinion, Governor Palin selected Christen over Smith, because Smith has a history of environmental activism from the bench. Alaska is a state reliant on energy exploration and drilling, and an activist on the bench, such as Smith, would do long term damage to the Alaskan economy. Governor Palin did the best she could with the hand she was dealt.
UPDATE by Ramrocks: There seems to be some question as to whether Christen is as awful a choice as some Alaska conservatives are claiming. It seems clearer by the minute that Gov. Palin made the right decision. And the people of Alaska have the ability to vote Christen out if they choose to do so. That’s part of the Missouri Plan!
