Fox News' Glenn Beck strikes ratings gold by challenging Barack Obama

Reporting from New York -- Before Glenn Beck started his new show on Fox News in January, he sat down with Roger Ailes, the network's chief executive, to make sure they were on the same page.

"I wanted to meet with Roger and tell him, 'You may not want to put me on the air. I believe we are in dire trouble, and I will never shut up,' " said the conservative radio host.

But before Beck could say anything, Ailes shared a message of his own: The country faced tough times, he said, and Fox News was one of the only news outlets willing to challenge the new administration.

"I see this as the Alamo," Ailes said, according to Beck. "If I just had somebody who was willing to sit on the other side of the camera until the last shot is fired, we'd be fine."

Can the GOP perhaps learn something from this? Probably not.

That is amazing. His ratings on HLN were crapola. Actually his show on HLN was crapola. His FOX show rocks though.

Wow! Just wow!

“If I just had somebody who was willing to sit on the other side of the camera until the last shot is fired, we’d be fine.”

Words fail me.

“Actually his show on HLN was crapola”

I don’t agree with that assessment, but I’m sure any shortcomings were due to HLN/CNN management “guidance.”

I don't think they're learning...I think the vast majority of the GOP are applauding. There's now ONE major media outlet from which their message is being broadcast (at least some of the time).

Sounds to me like that's a not-so-veiled shot at Bull O'Really, the biggest coward in journalism.

He’s a self-described Libertarian. I listen to him periodically. He contradicts the right on many issues.

Oba-clair is an Authoritarian, thus making Glen even angrier at him than most right-wingers.

He can self proclaim all he wants, but he is no libertarian in my book. Not that I care.

Major Garrett, the network's White House correspondent, attributes much of the viewership boost to the sheer volume of major stories that broke in the last month. In addition, "there very may well be a curiosity about the Fox brand interacting with the Obama brand," he said. "There may be an expectation of a higher degree of skepticism."

I used to like Major Garret, but he turned into an Obama lap dog during the campaign and still seems to be in that vein.

I agree with both of you. His stand on drug legalization is one of a number of indicators that say to me he is NOT a Libertarian.

I've yet to see him expound on much that differs from the ‘Theoretical' (As opposed to what the Rep clowns actually practice) Republican principles.

You know, if our elected leaders won’t lead, it may be that guys like Rush and Beck really wind up being the real leaders of the real GOP.

On paper, its Steele. Or our senators. But in actual fact, I haven’t seen much leadership from anyone in the official party. They’re all just beside themselves trying to figure out which way to go.

Dorks, every one of them.
