Obama Sticks to the (Teleprompter) Script
New York Times ^ | March 5, 2009 | Peter Baker

WASHINGTON — As he introduced his new choice for secretary of health and human services in the East Room this week, President Obama turned his head from right to left, but he wasn’t looking at the audience. He was reading from two teleprompters, strategically set up outside the tight television camera shot.

...

Presidents have been using teleprompters for more than half a century, but none relied on them as extensively as Mr. Obama has so far. While presidents typically have used them for their most important speeches to the nation — an inauguration, a State of the Union or an Oval Office address — Mr. Obama uses them for everyday routine announcements, and even for the opening statement at his news conference.

He used them during a visit to a Caterpillar plant in Peoria, Ill. He used them to make brief remarks at the opening of his “fiscal responsibility summit.” He used them during a visit to the Interior Department to discuss endangered species, even as he recalled a visit to some national parks as an 11-year-old. “That was an experience I will never forget,” he said, reading from the teleprompter.

...

Yet Bradley A. Blakeman, a former White House aide to President George W. Bush and a Republican strategist, said the teleprompter makes Mr. Obama look robotic. “He is extremely scripted, and he is cautious to the max and afraid of gaffes,” Mr. Blakeman said. When answering questions without a script, Mr. Blakeman said, “his speech is very halted, and you can see him take a lot of time to think about what he’s going to say.”

I think the reason he uses a teleprompter is to keep him from saying what he really believes. Remember the exchange with Joe the plumber?

I’m thinking that instead of admitting they were wrong, the media will simply gradually critizize him. Even Chrissy Mathews was trumpeting how right McCain is about ear marks. (With Obama they truly are EAR marks.)

I noticed this the other day when intro-ing the HHS. It was weird.

0bama is just a puppet. The big question is who is pulling the strings.

Nancy Pelosi seems to have a huge part in it with her porkulus bill (she and her flunkies wrote it). There are others, like David Axelrod who is probably a major speech writer.

Well, the media all have 401k’s and companies that are laying people off like crazy or shutting down altogether. The NYT and MSNBC, I guess, felt like if they carried his water somehow they would be saved. Ain't gonna happen. Useful idiots.

Gee. Didn't the "Leader of the Republican Party" mention this half a dozen times in his CPAC speech. They may not like him, but they're paying attention.

Shouldn’t the we be demanding to know who is answering these questions? After 8 years of jokes and criticism about who was manipulating the strings that controlled Bush, it is incredible that our press can sit and watch this guy answer every question and give every speech from a script.

Suppose someone can get access to the teleprompter control before a speech and type in “I AM RESIGNING, EFFECTIVE TODAY—AND JOE IS, TOO”...

With any luck, he’ll read it out loud before he realizes it.

"...it is incredible that our press can sit and watch this guy answer every question and give every speech from a script."

It is. But we're less than 60 days into the administration and they'll get restless at some point. They always do...

I hope that the majority of the British people noticed, especially Obama's Oval Office Press Appearance with Brown. Without his teleprompter, Obama was almost totally unable to articulate a logical and understandable phrase having to do with a policy issue. He made Bush look good.

IMHO - Anyone who viewed that appearance, friend or foe, had to come away wondering whether "...this guy Obama is anywhere near as sharp as I thought he was."

Bradley A. Blakeman, a former White House aide to President George W. Bush

When it comes to commenting on the articulation of thoughts, anyone associated with W is immediately disqualificated.

Well they wanted change, and they got it....

Script Man better hope he never experiences what Sarah Palin did during her RNC acceptance speech.

The teleprompter shorted, and Sarah strode on without a hitch...

Barry B would be dumbfounded, and set a new record for uh, uh, uh’s

The Cuda is a real person.

Kind of like they’ve always told ya, don’t lie cause ya can’t keep them straight.
Well Saracuda is a real person and tell is like she sees it not what the polls or teleprompter tells ya to say.
This magic negro is an assclown.

” The Cuda is a real person.”

And I hope we see her again. Agree with you, what she shows is what she is, not like Barry O Wanna be President.
