Whatever happened to “treat every gun like a loaded gun” and making sure the thing is 100% definitely NOT loaded and still treating every gun like a loaded gun.
And how exactly do you purport to get a cleaning rod [or string] in and out of the thing if the base is capped off with a round anyway?
This gets beyond asinine and into the surrealistic.
Either this father was so drunk he couldn't see straight, or he's lying and he shot the boy on purpose, or he has the IQ of a doorstop.
What kind of bonehead cleans a gun with BULLETS still in it?!?
I bet he was showing it off to the kid and that’s why this tragic preventable accident happened.
But just wait, HolyO will quote this and other similar incidents with boneheads as the reason why the gubmint needs to void that pesky little second amendment, you know, for the public’s safety because obviously the public can’t do any better than killing innocents with evil guns!

How to clean a gun:
1. Point the firearm in a safe direction while keeping your finger off the trigger.
2. Open the action, Remove the magazine and make sure there are no rounds in the chamber.

Please tell me, how do you clean a loaded gun? I have been a shooter my whole life, and a firearms instructor for more than half of it.
I feel for the family’s loss, but blame goes to, and remains with, the one holding the firearm.

Idiot. ALL of my firearms are cleaned regularly in ritualistic fashion and the first part of the ritual is to check for loads and thats not done by pulling the trigger and theres NO kids around.

I doubt very seriously he was cleaning the gun. I think the only FACT we have is that the boy was shot. The rest is testimony, apparently by the only surviving witness.
I suppose “cleaning the gun” is the best story I could come up with too.

What is the first thing you do when you pick up a handgun? Keeping your finger off the trigger and pointing it away from anything you would not want to kill, you take appropriate steps to determine whether the firearm is loaded. I'm sure I don't need to remind any gun owners here, but you just can't repeat it enough: All Guns Are Loaded.
So why is KSTP (Mpls/St.Paul) reporting on a gun death in Michigan?

I call BS. I think he accidentally killed the kid, then made up the “I was cleaning it” excuse later.
How many of the “cleaning” accidents are actually “screwing around with a loaded gun” accidents? If you claim it went off when you were cleaning it, it makes it seem like the shooter is less responsible.
This is an example of people who own guns casually and use them infrequently. They are not typical gun owners who fully understand the nature and purpose of the weapon and respect it as such. Too bad for this Dad, but it was entirely his fault.
I guess the next time there’s a fatal auto accident, people will say we should ban cars. It only follows.

I know I have to squeeze the HELL out of the trigger on both my guns to make them fire.
I am convinced that not a single person in the MSM has ever owned a firearm.
