Why couldn't President Obama have put on more of a show for his British guests? He looked like he simply couldn't be bothered.
Number 10 may be content that they just about got away with the visit to the Oval Office yesterday, as Andrew Porter reports from Washington.
But on this side of the Atlantic the whole business looked pretty demeaning. The morning papers and TV last night featured plenty of comment focused on the White House's very odd and, frankly, exceptionally rude treatment of a British PM. Squeezing in a meeting, denying him a full press conference with flags etc. The British press corps, left outside for an hour in the cold, can take it and their privations are of limited concern to the public.
But Obama's merely warmish words (one of our closest allies, said with little sincerity or passion) left a bitter taste with this Atlanticist. Especially after his team had made Number 10 beg for a mini press conference and then not even offered the PM lunch.

Amatuers run the show now. Yippee.
Communists have no class. They are rude and crude and ruthless. And they are empty suits.
The British can be somewhat formal, can’t they. However, Britain regardless of her current moral condition is still our longest lasting friend and her representative should be treated in a rude manner. Common Courtesy.
oops, my bad, obama doesn’t do that.
More like petulant children run the show.
"Yes, that's right... Mine is THIS long."
The Kenyan is sore at the former colonists, wouldn’t ya?
Not to mention him shipping back the bust of Churchill after being offered to keep it. Idiot.
It’s amateur hour, you can tell. How embarrassing...
n0 clASS.
Hey Britain, you most likely have the means to put down another Mau Mau Kenyan Rebel-lion. Take the hint.
Could it be punishment for the British press corps, which has run stories that America NEEDS to read but none of our reporter-whores can get off their knees long enough to ask a decent question?
It was a slap in the face to one of our best allies.
The Obama White House is crude, rude, and lacking in civility.
In the 1880's the territorial claims of Britain were established in the region, and in 1895 the United Kingdom established the British East Africa Protectorate.
Kenya was declared a colony of Britain in 1920. After years of turmoil and a revolution, independence from Britain was finally gained on December 12, 1963 (which is celebrated as the Kenyan Independence Day).
Your rapier like wit is just too much for him. He is helpless without a teleprompter. He wouldn’t last 30 seconds with a Brit reporter.
He also probably resents your colonialism in his native land of Kenya. You guys were pretty rough on the natives over there.
I am, however a bit surprised he didn’t give the PM a bit more of the time of day since he, obambi, is a British subject. Probably hates you too though. Actually, he hates anybody who has been successful. He was raised that way, taught that anybody with more than his hairy armpit commie mother got it unfairly.
He was also abandoned by every father figure in his life and probably abused by at least one of them so he can’t stand authority figures either.
That Erkel is a real nut job.
Hey, if they had some proof that Bambi was born in Kenya, just think of the kind of blackmail they could get away with.
He’s saving the red carpet treatment for Baby Hugo and Adminejad.
