Marietta F-22’s fate up in air
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | Friday, February 27, 2009 | Dan Chapman

The fate of the F-22 Raptor fighter jet, assembled by Lockheed Martin Corp. in Marietta, won’t be known until April when President Obama details his budgetary priorities, administration and congressional officials said Thursday.

The president’s budget includes $534 billion for the Department of Defense, a four percent increase over the current budget. Obama and other administration officials have hinted recently, though, that money for big-dollar weapons systems like the F-22 will be cut.

The president, in his Tuesday address to Congress, promised “to reform our defense budget so that we’re not paying for Cold War-era weapons systems we don’t use.” Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.), whose district includes the airplane factory, hopes Obama wasn’t talking about the F-22.

That’s fine. It was a broadcast email and I don’t know if he even read it before forwarding. He’s been retired for a long time. I just copied and pasted it since I know nothing about G loading. The pictures are pretty awesome though. If the simulation test is true, and the Raptor can make those kind of kill ratios, then I still can’t believe dear leader wants to stop production. G forces notwithstanding, I hope you can still enjoy the photos. They look real.

Russia and China are still threats. Therefore, the F-22 is a necessary project, and should be procured at the original numbers (1100 aircraft).

Think of the extra jobs that these would generate...

It was on the drawing board during the 1980’s. It was delayed because of the end of the Cold War. If the Cold War didn’t end, the F-22 would probably have been deployed by 1995.

But, are these people not working? Wouldn’t it be counterproductive to lay off people with so much Porkulus money from our grandchildren’s earnings?

Carter killed the B-1. The F-22 is 0bama’s B-1. I mean, if we weren’t armed, everyone would love us.

It should be called the F-22 Dead Albatross. It is a political football and is goosed up for a war we'll never fight. It costs too much and the money is better spent elsewhere (in our military).

No current Air Force pilot I know believes they'll be humans in a cockpit in the near future. Wrong direction and too much lucre.

What about the jobs that wasteful spending will cost in taxes?

I saw an early F-16 (Block 10) where the flight control computers apparently had some sort of fight for control.

The pilot G-LOC'd several times but eventually got things under control and landed.

When you got up close to the jet you could see very defined ripples down the backbone. Scratch one Falcon from the inventory.

Nice Graphics.Unfortunately we have No idea what the rules were prior to this engagement,Whether it was guns only or what.If this were an actual combat engagement that f-18 Growler would have been smoked before his radar even picked up the Raptors radar signature.

If it was guns only how many dog fights occurred? Not to disparage the navy pilot but he could have had just good luck or the Raptor pilot could have just screwed up en an engagement. It can and will happen. Pilots are human, they're not perfect. All the more reason to build more f-22’s then they have allotted spending for.

Photos are very real.

The jet is an absolute marvel, nothing comes close.

Kill ratios are what they are.

Schwartz wants more jets, and while the Air Force says 381, maybe lucky if they get around 220.

Not enough but enough to count when pressed.

Nice but not an actual kill. . .as the aircraft (F-18) was already dead well before the merge.

The F-22 was ignoring the guy because the guy was DEAD and should have exited the fight well before the merge but the guy ignored ROE and went in anyway.

No way would the F-18 get that close, or any other fighter out there, if the fight was real. F-22’s don't merge. . .why should they, they can kill from a distance and if they have to, they will close for guns and the victim won't even see them coming.
