Professor Takes Heat for Calling Cops on Student Who Discussed Guns in Class

A professor in Connecticut reported one of her students to the police after he gave a class presentation on why students and teachers should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus. Now, free speech activists say the professor’s actions are what really need to be investigated.

Last October, John Wahlberg and two classmates at Central Connecticut State University gave an oral presentation for a communications class taught by Professor Paula Anderson. The assignment was to discuss a “relevant issue in the media,” and the students presented their view that the death toll in the April 2007 Virginia Tech shooting massacre would have been lower if professors and students had been carrying guns.

That night, police called Wahlberg, a 23-year-old senior, and asked him to come to the station. When he arrived, they they read off a list of firearms that were registered in his name and asked where he kept them. Guns are strictly prohibited on the CCSU campus and residence halls, but Wahlberg says he lives 20 miles off-campus and keeps his gun collection locked up in a safe. No further action was taken by police or administrators.

“I don’t think that Professor Anderson was justified in calling the CCSU police over a clearly non-threatening matter,” Wahlberg told The Recorder, the CCSU student newspaper that first reported the story. “Although the topic of discussion may have made a few individuals uncomfortable, there was no need to label me as a threat.”

Wahlberg declined to comment further to FOXNews.com, saying he did not want more media attention.

According to The Recorder, Anderson cited safety as her reason for calling the police.

And logically in the 1960s had a woman in her class given a speech on why abortion should be made legal, she would have called the cops to check to see if the woman was pregnant and planning to seek an illegal abortion?

Logically she would call the cops if she heard of students planning an illegal demonstration?

I don't see how this isn't a violation of this young man's civil rights.

You'd probably find that you somehow waived your rights by simply enrolling in that university. When I read this story I knew it had to be campus cops even before I reached that part of the story.

I really don’t see the big deal. The police asked him to come to the station. He did so voluntarily. They asked him some questions. He answered voluntarily. That’s it.

Which rights, exactly, were violated?

You may be right. But, I ask (rhetorically) how in the world does the campus police department get a list of all the firearms this man owns.

I had a criminal procedure professor in law school who was an ex-FBI agent. She had the Feds come in to show weapons, and demonstrate non-lethal weapons.

How did the campus police get this information? Where is this data being stored, and who is collecting it?

It's Connecticut, which is more or less a communist country where gun laws are concerned. It's probably one of those states where you have to inform the local cops of what firearms you own.

Some liberal nanny saw my NRA plates today and told me I'd better enjoy it while I can.
I laughed at her and patted my hip. The fear on her face was priceless.

Since Obama happened, the gun grabbers are "feeeeling" emboldened.

Do we ask people to register books they own?

Not yet, they just haven't thought about that.

It was also a goo-goo university nitwit who ruined Richard Jewell’s life because he showed a fondness for guns that, of course, made him a prime suspect in the Olympic Park bombing.

Harassment under color of law. False report of a crime. Probably a few other violations.

Not to pick a fight, but do you wish to live in a country when the state has state to ask (and when I say ask, you know they meant demand) answers from you about how you exercise your Constitutionally guaranteed writes under the First and Second amendment.

What crime exactly where they investigating?

Easy, bud! I’ve got glasses and short hair. At least where it’s still growing a little, it’s pretty short.

Educators can be so petty - because for many of them, there is so little at stake.

Personally I find it more than a little disturbing that simply speaking openly about a constitutional rights issue in a class dedicated (loosely) to 1st amendment rights, resulted in anyone calling the police to begin with.

It’s like calling the police because my neighbor talks about guns and hunting. then having him questioned about what guns he has etc.
