Moderates Uneasy With Obama Budget Plan (DINOs?)
SeeBS news ^ | March 4, 2009 | Manu Raju

Moderate and conservative Democrats in the Senate are starting to choke over the massive spending and tax increases in President Barack Obama’s budget plans and have begun plotting to increase their influence over the agenda of a president who is turning out to be much more liberal than they are.

A group of 14 Senate Democrats and one independent huddled behind closed doors on Tuesday, discussing how centrists in that chamber can assert more leverage on the major policy debates that will dominate this Congress.

<snip>

Sen. Evan Bayh, the Indiana Democrat who assembled Tuesday’s skull session, added that he was “very concerned” about Washington’s level of spending, especially in a $410 billion “omnibus” spending bill to fund the government until the start of a new fiscal year in October.

Lieberman, McCaskill, Bayh, Ben Nelson, Landrieu, Begich, Warner, Bill Nelson, Klobuchar, Pryor, Shaheen, Casey, Tester and Blanche Lincoln.

Only two voted for McCain's amendment yesterday to kill the Omnibust spending act and substitute a spending freeze at FY2008 levels for the remainder of FY2009.

Now, I'm getting reports that some of these "moderate Democrats" are leaning toward killing the Omnibus bill entirely.

Can one of them propose the same kind of amendment? Or can the McCain amendment be reconsidered?

There is no plan. Just an agenda. The goal is to implement nationalization and socialism, not to fix the economy.

If we were to call or email these Senators, what should we be asking them to do or not do (specifically)? I have not been following this budget stuff very closely.

I believe these guys have gotten out their crystal balls and with the mood of the country right now, have seen the steam rising out of voters..IMHO, they're looking out for their futures at this time.

Ping.

This is why I said yesterday that there was hope for McCain's spending freeze substitute/amendment.

I had heard that as many as a dozen Dems were considering voting for that amendment. As it turned out, if all fourteen of these "moderate" Dems had voted for McCain's substitute, it wouldn't have mattered. Why start the fight within the Dem ranks for nothing. It's suicide to jump to the losing side of the vote, unless you can make it the winning side.

As it turned out, all but Bayh and McCaskill voted against McCain's amendment.

But I'm pretty sure if Kyl (the Republican Whip, or is that spelled Wimp) had done his job and kept the Republicans in line, more of these fourteen would have crossed over.

There is a difference between being a democrat and a socialist in many of the states represented. Even if they are only trying to save their own bacon, they know this is way beyond there label back home.

As always, they are trading votes so that they can get reelected in 2-years.

They are planning their plausible deniability. Democrats will ensure that Obama's bills pass as they tell their local voters "I didn't vote for that".

Well, if we can't hold the Republicans together for fiscal responsibility, we won't be able to count on these fourteen at all.

Yesterday, there was an opportunity to kill the Omnibus bill and substitute a spending freeze. This was the amendment that McCain proposed. Unfortunately, 7 RINOs couldn't even vote for that amendment. When these moderate Dems did the math, 32 Republicans plus their 14 votes was only 46, still not enough to pass the amendment. So most of the Dems stayed with their party.

We have to keep things close enough on the Republican side that 14 more votes can make a majority. Without that, these 14 can't do anything. These fourteen are just enough to get past Specter, Snow and Collins to make actual changes that require a majority. But we can't give up any more votes than that.

I’ve written Klobuchar myself, and get the usual B.S. rationalization for the Porkulus package. She really must be getting the heat if she’s starting to question it.

REmember when Reid was chuckling over every hundred point drop in the Dow meant another Democrat pick up in the House,

Democrats remember.. Looks like they should loose about 300 seats.

Uh, wasn’t he known to be the most liberal senator all along?

O well, it’s OK because it has been “Historic”.
