BITELY: Thank you Senator DeMint for dropping by NetRight Nation. Can you tell us about the meaning of the 3 Senate Republicans that flipped and sided with Senate Democrats on the "Stimulus" vote?
DEMINT: Glad to be here Adam and thank you for giving me this opportunity. Blogging is a very important aspect of the Movement and I appreciate all of the work that you and other bloggers do.
The three Republicans that went into the negotiations with the Democrats did not represent the Senate GOP. They represented themselves. They played the GOP for fools. The belief that centrally planned economies work died several decades ago. The free market approach is best. Apparently, the three Republicans that sided with Senate Democrats forgot these lessons.
There are only 15 real Conservatives in the Senate. If the GOP wants to have success in the future, they must return to their roots. While there may be those that say we need to be more moderate, freedom works for everyone and we should not concede that battle.
BITELY: You're absolutely right. So has the bailout mentality infected everyone?
DEMINT: After Obama's State of the Union, it would seem that they will bail out anyone with a problem. This may be good for Conservatives as Americans realize what is going on and what is happening to their money. Obama will continue to blame the economic problems on Bush. The problem is that this administration thinks that Americans are stupid and that they won't understand what is happening. I don't think they are and I think they will see what is happening.
BITELY: I have to agree with you on that. They are not stupid. They are paying attention and are starting to take to the streets. A few months ago I interviewed you outside of the Senate chamber and you mentioned that you thought there would be riots with all of the bailouts happening. Do you still believe that?
DEMINT: I still believe that there could be riots. Most will be small, but I think there is a chance that we can see some large ones. Small activist groups do make a difference. Calling and emailing your elected representatives does influence how they vote. I have a friend in the Senate that said if he gets 15 calls on an issue telling him to vote a certain way, he will pay attention to that. Senators need to be afraid of their constituents and not the unions, trial lawyers and George Soros.
Jim DeMint ping!
They should have feared us in 2006 & 2008.
We’ll see if they learned anything next year.
BTT!
Agreed. Would reduce cost, reduce pressure of professional lobbyists, end beltway "Stockholm Syndrome".
Ping!
