This is one of those stories that just outrages us. From William McGurn in the Wall Street Journal:
Dick Durbin has a nasty surprise for two of Sasha and Malia Obama's new schoolmates. And it puts the president in an awkward position.
The children are Sarah and James Parker. Like the Obama girls, Sarah and James attend the Sidwell Friends School in our nation's capital. Unlike the Obama girls, they could not afford the school without the $7,500 voucher they receive from the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship program. Unfortunately, a spending bill the Senate takes up this week includes a poison pill that would kill this program -- and with it perhaps the Parker children's hopes for a Sidwell diploma.
An absolute obscenity. And liberals claim they're all for "the people." Right - as long as "the people" are members of education unions.
Known as the "Durbin language" after the Illinois Democrat who came up with it last year, the provision mandates that the scholarship program ends after the next school year unless Congress reauthorizes it and the District of Columbia approves.
Here's a program that seems to work. Let's kill it. There are endangered species to save in Nancy Pelosi's district! Let's get our priorities straight.
Deborah Parker says such a move would be devastating for her kids. "I once took Sarah to Roosevelt High School to see its metal detectors and security guards," she says. "I wanted to scare her into appreciation for what she has at Sidwell." It's not just safety, either. According to the latest test scores, fewer than half of Roosevelt's students are proficient in reading or math.

I find it quaint that some of the rabble continue to think that Democrats care about them and their tiny, little insignificant problems.
She probably has to work.
Frankly, it amazes me...particularly when one can find out exactly what he did and did not do as a Senator in Illinois.
The elites dont want the “low lifes” in school with their children. They also dont want them at home. PUBLIC SCHOOL FOR THE SHEEPLE!

I would like to know who this woman voted for? Did she vote for 0bama? How about votes to build up the liberal house and senate? I’m not saying she is, but lately when I hear liberals complain, I find a way to say that they got exactly what they voted for. Good job!
You make an excellent point and my guess is that she most definitely voted for him. Even some Democrats I know are coming to regret....because of what he’s doing.....and not doing. He’s a radical and inept opportunist.

I know lots of single mothers that homeschool. They ban together and split shifts.
I would work the graveyard shift and cut sleep rather than sending my children to that horrible school. Wouldn’t you?
I can say, as an educator, that I would no longer send any child of mine to public school. There might be a few exceptions depending on the school. I doubt there are any exceptions in DC.

Especially since she has seen the school.
I’m not an anti-PS person. I believe one must do the best for his/her children, but she described that school. I would move heaven and earth not to send my kids there.
If she doesn’t want her kids in the DC Public Schools, and Sidwell is too expensive, she ought to look at the Catholic School in DC. They do a much better job than the public school, and for a LOT less money than Sidwell. They even have ‘scholarship programs’ for needy students.
