Conservative Activists Still Favor Romney

If the Republican Party’s conservative wing had the power to choose presidential nominees, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney would be the hands-down choice.

For the third straight year, activists attending the Conservative Political Action Conference chose Romney, a candidate in the 2008 primaries, as their future presidential favorite in a straw poll.

He won 20 percent of the straw poll vote.

A relative newcomer who has been much in the news came in second: Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal was favored by 14 percent of the conservatives at the annual Washington gathering.

Third place was a tie between Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin , who was the party’s vice presidential nominee in 2008 and former presidential candidate Ron Paul . Each was preferred by 13 percent of conference goers.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich placed fifth, with 10 percent of the straw poll vote.

Meanwhile Gov. Palin’s son is serving in a Stryker Brigade in Iraq, his unit recently suffering three casualties.

Let’s not go crazy now. He is driving the General around. He is probably getting a doggy bag from all the fancy parties his boss goes to. I know that commander’s take care of their drivers.

It is people like you, who make statements like that, who do more to prove that Mitt Romney is no conservative than almost anything he has ever said or done.

If an individual is willing to say something like that about a conservative who has proven herself, and insult Reagan, which I know you have done, we had that talk many moons ago, well let's just say it speaks volumes about the choice you would make.

Conservative is not something you are, and if you think that I don't know who you are kidding more, yourself or others.

ROTFLOL!

The only way I see that deal working is if mitt-man takes the VeeP slot. Mitt may be more conservative than Obama, Biden, Hitlery, McCain, and Huckabee...but that is not saying enough for the AmericanArchConservative!

I like Jindal a lot and he has (as yet) no baggage whatsoever, but it would be great for him to clock in another solidly conservative few years as La. Guv before ascending to the national stage.

Actually I would prefer to see him complete two full and wildly successful terms as Governor to serve as a fantastic springboard, but unless some miracle happens in the GOP before 2012, this country may need him in the #1 or #2 slot in order to stave off the complete disaster of another four years of this socialist obamanation.

Our nation is resilient enough, we might survive four years of this crapola. Eight years, I highly doubt.

Ideal scenario: Palin steps to the forefront in ‘12 and wins the GOP nomination outright. She then chooses another bona fide Conservative as VeeP, like Fred Thompson, Mark Racicot, Jim DeMint...Meanwhile, Jindal serves out his second term as Gov. and when finished, Palin selects him to fill a prominent cabinet post (Homeland Sec?). The Gov. serves two years in the cabinet, vaulting him further into national prominence.

Having opened up the OCOS and oil shale deposits to exploration and drilling, vast tracts of land to clean coal removal and processing, encouraged natural gas exploration, extraction, and useage, as well as opening up the US energy market with a new, middle-bid process and lowered capital gains and corporate tax rates, thus instigating the building of new nuclear plants and new oil refineries - Palin handily wins re-election in ‘16.

She keeps the same veep, and keeps Jindal in her cabinet - maybe elevating him to SecState (where his ethnicity gives him a touchstone to build strong ties with India, and to encourage their democracy. As well, he stands strong with Israel, and gets tougher with the Saudis - who, having lost almost half their oil market, are suddenly amenable to negotiations...)

In ‘20, Jindal would be 49 - almost 50. After 2 great terms as Guv and 6 years in the W.H. cabinet, he could assume the lead on the (once more solidly Conservative) GOP ticket, and chooses from among an array of rising young Conservative GOP stars - Governors, Senators, and Congresspeople among them...winning in a Reagan-like landslide of 48 states.

A second term is a given; by the time Jindal leaves office in 2028 at age 58...

...our beloved republic may just survive to see her 300th birthday, less than 50 years away.

Pinging my lists to this comment by a mittbot whose hero made THIS comment: Romney, on the question if any of his five sons were serving in the military, and if not, how they plan to support the war against terrorism:

"The good news is that we have a volunteer Army and that's the way we're going to keep it," Romney told the crowd, adding, "One of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping to get me elected, because they think I'd be a great president."

I suggest you all ping YOUR lists to this trashy, low-class comment in post 108.

Mitt was a gun grabber until 2007.

Palin and her son are not gun grabbers.

Where's the endorsement? Do you mean it comes later, as in AFTER the words in the clip?

The use of the word "embody" is hardly an endorsement. Rush said "based on the way the campaign has shaken out, that there probably is a candidate on our side who does embody all three legs of the conservative stool, and that's Romney." He goes on to talk about how the other candidates seem uninterested in the various legs of the stool, at least, that's how it reads to me. There is zero praise of Romney. None. In fact, he doesn't even talk about the guy.

Now, I don't get Rush 24 and wouldn't know how to get transcripts, but I could swear I heard him play clips of things Romney said during the debates, and saying afterward, "Folks, this is not conservatism." Call me dim, but I kinda take that to mean Rush thinks little of Romney. I'm not going to declare publicly that "Rush rejects Romney!" because it would be a lie, and I don't put words in Rush's mouth. But I listen to what he says, and make educated guesses. You, on the otherhand, have turned Rush's comment into "Rush voted for Romney and said so on his show."

All I can say, Barnacle, is that YOU LIE OUTRIGHT about what pundits have said and done with regard to Romney.

Good on ya, greyfoxx. I suspected that Romney packed the convention with his activists. That's the only way he could come out on top.

Why you are jealous you never served your country. Doesn’t surprise me any with your potty mouth. Disgusting that you represent conservatives. I hope your friends know the truth about you.

Thanks much!

I have other thoughts and ideas about some planks which I believe would help form a terrific, new platform for a revived, CONSERVATIVE-CONTROLLED G.O.P. I have not thrown all of them into that particular posting (for the sake of brevity) but I did want to float a few of them and see what sort of response was generated from fellow FReepers.

I am considering “brainstorming”, getting all these ideas of mine coalesced into one mass, expanding/putting flesh upon them, then organizing them together with acknowledged Conservative principles, refining them into essay form, and putting them up on FR as a “vanity” post, and pinging everyone I know.

Oh, they know me. And your friends know who you are by your attitude toward our warriors what ever their service to their country is. You dishonor them by your mockery.
Potty mouth? To compare you to a donkey, it appears my comparison is correct.

You are right.

I think incessant infighting is counter productive.

It sounds like the Huffington Post....in here.

Mitt is a real contender and very smart.

You are not even sane and I don’t say that lightly. I feel sorry for you because you have no idea that I am in the military and know exactly what drivers are expected of doing in Iraq and Afganistan. Have you served even one minute of your life in the military? I did not think so. I am going on 22 years in June. So please don’t tell me about the military unless you have over 22 years in than perhaps I will apologize and we will continue this discussion differently, but until you let me know you status in the armed forces, I will just pray for your soul for hopefully your lack of morals will not cause you problems when you go see the big guy.
