If the Republican Partys conservative wing had the power to choose presidential nominees, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney would be the hands-down choice.
For the third straight year, activists attending the Conservative Political Action Conference chose Romney, a candidate in the 2008 primaries, as their future presidential favorite in a straw poll.
He won 20 percent of the straw poll vote.
A relative newcomer who has been much in the news came in second: Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal was favored by 14 percent of the conservatives at the annual Washington gathering.
Third place was a tie between Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin , who was the partys vice presidential nominee in 2008 and former presidential candidate Ron Paul . Each was preferred by 13 percent of conference goers.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich placed fifth, with 10 percent of the straw poll vote.
Surely there was a mis-count. McCain had to be it!
Activists.
He’s still got Massachusetts crud all over his resume!
Today: I would also pick Romney ,in fact I picked him before the New Hampshire idiots gave the run to McCain.
In 4 years I dont know who I would pick sarah has a good chance of becoming more experienced and gaining ground by doing well in Alaska. Jindal may make a come back from his poor performance. I like many of Ron Paul’s idea’s , but I still think he is a nut. I like the way Newt talks, but he should have fought back before leaving the House in disgrace.
Perhaps we will get a dark horse between now and then.
Personally, I favor Newt. He & Huckabee are the only ones who seem capable of thinking on their feet and besting Dems. Newt is preferred among those two.
Would be interesting to see how Jindal would have done if his rebuttal appearance had gone better.
“Surely there was a mis-count. McCain had to be it!”
Whoopee!
This pleases me greatly.
For a few days I have been worried about Palin winning and how that might destroy her efforts to pull back from media saturation.
By not showing up and by coming in third she can conduct the next year of her campaign at her own pace and build momentum by her own schedule.
I see you are pushing a Romney palin deal.
Crap load better than McCain Palin.
Oh boy....
If he runs it will be “ROMNEY IS A MORMON” 24/7 until the election....just like the primaries..
GAAAH!
Not what we need. No thanks...
How many people were at CPAC and how many Conservatives live in America?
Ya think that a CPAC poll is representative for the conservative base out there?
Since Mitt is such a prudent man on financial matters, I hope he doesn't lose again millions by running for the top slot in vain.
I hope everyone here realizes that after four years of 0bamanation, voters will yearn for a real change. Might just as well run a real fresh Conservative.
I picked Romney over McCain in the California primaries, but that was a pretty easy decision for me to make at the time.
Yeah... Let’s dig into a mixed bag of has-beens and never-will-be’s to try and topple the Democrat machine. That oughta work as good as running McCain did.
Did they run a SNL sketch on magic underwear already?
I was for Fred until he dropped....I was going to sit out until Plain was picked..
Would be interesting to see if pigs could be eagles, given wings.
Seriously, the GOP is lurching from iceberg to iceberg looking for all the world like a stiff searching for a hole to fall in.
Frankly, I'm appalled.
