Conservative Activists Still Favor Romney

If the Republican Party’s conservative wing had the power to choose presidential nominees, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney would be the hands-down choice.

For the third straight year, activists attending the Conservative Political Action Conference chose Romney, a candidate in the 2008 primaries, as their future presidential favorite in a straw poll.

He won 20 percent of the straw poll vote.

A relative newcomer who has been much in the news came in second: Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal was favored by 14 percent of the conservatives at the annual Washington gathering.

Third place was a tie between Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin , who was the party’s vice presidential nominee in 2008 and former presidential candidate Ron Paul . Each was preferred by 13 percent of conference goers.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich placed fifth, with 10 percent of the straw poll vote.

" Thanks for revealing everyone how appreciative some Romneybots are of our servicemen.
Almost Romneyesque, who said that his sons' work in his primary campaign equals military service in the WoT."

This is 'standard' Romney thinking.
Consider combat medic Lt. Anthony Circosta, hated by Governor Romney.

"National Guard Lt. Anthony Circosta poses in his backyard in Agawam, Mass., on June 9, 2007.
At left, his wife Danielle and daughter Kylie, 2, talk near the swing set. Circosta,
a decorated Iraq War veteran, seemed like an ideal candidate for a pardon from
then-Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney for the 29-year-old's boyhood conviction
for a BB gun shooting. Romney denied the pardon,
twice, despite the recommendation of the Governor's Council.
"

That quote was put together by the MSM in January of `08 to try to destroy Romney. He was not comparing his sons to the Army volunteers that he had mentioned before.

If I were to get down to your level I would post MSNBC articles about Palin but I won`t do that. Palin delivered a landslide victory to Romney in Alaska during last years primary. She would be embarrassed by the behavior of some of her supporters.

Are you kidding me? I always mistrust the MSM but just saying it's MSM doesn't cut it.

Say what you want about the leftist creeps at MSNBC and the questioner... the blah blah of the questioner on MSNBC is tedious for sure, BUT Romney however DID make these remarks VERBATIM: Here is the video.

Nothing was twisted or taken out of context:

Mitt Romney on how getting him elected is like military service.

The Romney sons on whether they have considered serving.

Regarding the ridiculous, petty smears against Palin, I can disprove them with facts or discredit them through their unsourced nature. Say what you want about Palin, but she never tires to disprove the lies.

Addition: Sorry for the musictrack... but here Mitts response with the question. The previous video included only the answer.

If he runs it will be “ROMNEY IS A MORMON” 24/7 until the election....just like the primaries...

The only time I heard about Romney being a Mormon was through Romney-bots whining and trying to blame politically-based rejection of their moderate candidate on religious bigotry.

Romney is no conservative. So since he won the CPAC straw poll, that tells me the majority of CPAC is controlled by RINOS.

The good news is Paul and Palin tied for third. So there is hope there may actually be a few real conservatives involved in CPAC.

Fiscal conservatism eventually leads to social conservatism in my book.

My revised and edited book has come to this conclusion:

Limited government leads to social and fiscal conservatism. It is why the person who says, "I'm a fiscal conservative but a social liberal" is stating an oxymoron.

LIMITED GOVERNMENT produces social and fiscal conservatism -- not the other way around. It's an important disctinction that I've only grasped in the past five years or so.

Because Romney has demonstrated consistently that he sees government as the solution, all his declarations of being "conservative," fiscal or otherwise, are moot. Expanded government leads to fiscal and social liberal expansion. Romney in power would lead to increased fiscal and social liberalism no matter what words come out of his mouth.

...some people might value private sector experience ...

A lot of the most ardent liberals in the country are business types with private sector experience -- Michael Eisner and Warren Buffett come to mind.

Grankly, if the next “standard-bearer” for the Republicans is Willard, I’m out of the party.

Ditto that. And for those reading who think desire for vengeance, revenge, "teaching a lesson" or "taking my marbles and going home" is behind MY thinking on this, I say attributing such petty motivations to such serious action on my and MortMan's part is as insulting to us as it is emotionally convenient for those doing the attributing.

The vote is, rightly, the only mechanism available to influence the direction of the GOP. I can donate to and support and campaign as much as I want for my favorite candidate, and so can every other registered Republican, but when it comes down to it, votes are what determine the course of the GOP. Out of pragmatism for too many years I have voted for liberals resistered as Republicans. For too long I have either thought it pragmatically "wise" or been emotionally blackmailed into it.

I've come to realize how foolish I am to be surprised that the GOP ship is near foundering on Liberal shoals. The only way to change course is to change the set of the sails, and the only way to do that in the Republican party is to STOP VOTING FOR LIBERALS. When Liberals start to lose in the Republican party, only then will the party become more conservative.

To the contrary, Bozo.
Romney and Legion of Trained Hate-filled RomneyBOTs put Obama in office.
How is that working out for you?

“Nothing was twisted or taken out of context”

LOL.. just watch your video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8ZrxB5Yr9Y&;

Until 0:26 he was talking about the military and then they cut and show him talking about how his sons are helping in the campaign. This is pathetic. A Palin supporter posting MSNBC videos to “try” to smear Romney. What`s next? A Keith Olberman editorial trashing Romney to prove that he`s a liberal? This controversy over his sons was quickly debunked over a year ago. If you google it you`ll find a press release that Romney put out saying he never compared his sons to army volunteers. I don`t even know why you`re bringing this up. Obama won. Romney lost. Hopefully that wasn`t what you had in mind when this thing started.

The only difference I see between McCain and Romney is Romney is 100X better at manipulating conservatives. This guy tells us what he knows we want to hear while expecting us to just forget the past with him.

Amen, amen, amen.

That's why I say Romney would have been WORSE than McCain or Obama in the long run -- not short run, but long run. It is why when I give my thanks for God's blessings, one of them is thanks for the fact that Romney LOST. I will fight to keep Romney OUT of GOP leadership.

A Palin supporter posting MSNBC videos to “try” to smear Romney.

He made the comments... if there is something missing, I pretty please ask you whether the magnificent Romney Campaign has come forward with the full record or transcript. Let me see it.

As I said, think about Palin what you want, she takes the effort to correct the record.

Obama won. Romney lost. Hopefully that wasn`t what you had in mind when this thing started.

Matter of factly I voted for your Mitt when the other choice was McCain (forget about Huck). Your insinuation is reprehensible.

OK, here is the transcript:

Governor Romney: "Well, the good news is that we have a volunteer army and that's the way we're going to keep it. My sons are all adults and they've made their decisions about their careers and they've chosen not to serve in the military and active duty. I respect their decision in that regard. I also respect and value very highly those who make a decision to serve in the military. I think we ought to show an outpouring of support just as I suggested. A surge of support for those families and those individuals who are serving. My niece, for instance, just to tell you what a neighborhood can do and how touching it can be.

"My niece, Misha, living out West, her husband I think he got a call on a Tuesday. He's in the National Guard. He got a call on a Tuesday that he was going to be called up and shipped overseas on a Thursday. And they just bought a home -– they hadn’t landscaped it -– but the rules in the neighborhood were that unless you got your home landscaped within a year of the time that you bought your home, they began fining you, because they didn’t want people having mud holes in front of their homes. And she was very worried and just before the year expired, she woke up one morning and looked out the window and all the neighbors were out there, rolling down sod, putting up trees, getting it all done."

"It’s remarkable how we can show our support for our nation and one of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping to get me elected, because they think I’d be a great president. My son, Josh, bought the family Winnebago and has visited 99 counties, most of them with his three kids and his wife. And I respect that and respect all of those in the way they serve this great country."

Talk about a cheap shot against an enlisted soldier voluntarily serving his country in a war zone.

Yep. One more example that GOP voters MUST heed in considering Romney -- the behavior of his supporters speaks volumes about the candidate. As represented in their posts on Free Republic, Romney supporters show disproportionate tendencies of being poor losers, devious, and at times OUTRIGHT LIARS with regard to so-called "endorsements" or "support" from respected pudits ranging from Rush Limbaugh to Michael Reagan. On Free Republic, most Romney supporters are consistenly and quickly prone to attributing to hate and/or religious bigotry the rejection of their candidate's politics and accusing anti-Romney people of posting "anti Mormon vitriol" under different screen names or of wanting to post it but resisting the temptation. Such is the bad sport, low standards, poor loser mentality of Romney supporters as represented on FR. KEEP ROMNEY OUT OF GOP LEADERSHIP. He and his followers are BAD NEWS.

You`ve been manipulated by MSNBC.

Not really... Duly noted that he said something between the shown soundbites...

But I earnestly read that transcript ten times and I'm not sure whether his full remarks are making things any better... what has the middle paragraph to do with serving? Helping your neighbour with gardening? Heartwarming story... But in the third paragraph he comes back to the first paragraph... and for all intents and purposes he put's his son's campaign work, garden help and military service into one category of "supporting the country".

My impression hasn't that much changed, except that I now see that he is quite meandering with his argumentation. It doesn't change the essence of his remarks... when asked whether his sons are serving in the military, he talks about how helping tender a servicemen's garden and getting him elected are also a form of "service".

All being done and said, I will oppose him in the primaries, but would vote for him if he were the GOP candidate, just as I voted for McCain versus Obama.
