Conservative Activists Still Favor Romney
cqpolitics ^ | Feb. 28, 2009 | Staff

If the Republican Party’s conservative wing had the power to choose presidential nominees, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney would be the hands-down choice.

For the third straight year, activists attending the Conservative Political Action Conference chose Romney, a candidate in the 2008 primaries, as their future presidential favorite in a straw poll.

He won 20 percent of the straw poll vote.

A relative newcomer who has been much in the news came in second: Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal was favored by 14 percent of the conservatives at the annual Washington gathering.

Third place was a tie between Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin , who was the party’s vice presidential nominee in 2008 and former presidential candidate Ron Paul . Each was preferred by 13 percent of conference goers.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich placed fifth, with 10 percent of the straw poll vote.

Agreed. NO RINOs, ever. I will write in Ron Paul every time if I have to, rather than waste my vote ever again on a loser RINO like McLame...

Well Governor Palin is our current front runner and has had that position from the day she walked out on stage, she wins every republican voter poll since the 2008 election, including the one this week.
She is still the most popular governor in America has a history of victories and will easily win reelection, so I don’t know what her weaknesses are.

Romney only has that single term as Governor under his belt and he left that with low approval numbers, nothing to show for it, and no reelection.

Allen will have to regain state office to reenter the game.

So Palin doesn’t figure into this, Romney is finished I believe, all though he will hurt people before he goes, and Allen needs to regain the senate or his old governors seat to relaunch from if he wants a chance.

Yes but there is no way Romney could have been as bad a RINO backstabbing turd as McLame is was and will always be.

Romney supports liberal judges that let murderers go,
and encourage rapists to rape children in libraries.

"Governor Mitt Romney, who touts his conservative credentials to out-of-state Republicans,
has passed over GOP lawyers for three-quarters of the 36 judicial vacancies he has faced
,
instead tapping registered Democrats or independents -- including two gay lawyers who
have supported expanded same-sex rights, a Globe review of the nominations has found.
Of the 36 people Romney named to be judges or clerk magistrates, 23 are either registered Democrats
or unenrolled voters who have made multiple contributions to Democratic politicians
or who voted in Democratic primaries, state and local records show.
In all, he has nominated nine registered Republicans, 13 unenrolled voters,
and 14 registered Democrats."
- Boston Globe 7/25/2005

and this

Romney Rewards one of the State's Leading Anti-Marriage Attorneys by Making him a Judge
Romney told the U.S. Senate on June 22, 2004, that the "real threat to the States is not the
constitutional amendment process, in which the states participate,
but activist judges who disregard the law and redefine marriage . . ."
Romney sounds tough but yet he had no qualms advancing the legal career of one
of the leading anti-marriage attorneys.
He nominated Stephen Abany to a District Court.
Abany has been a key player in the Massachusetts Lesbian and Gay Bar Association which,
in its own words, is "dedicated to ensuring that the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court decision
on marriage equality is upheld, and that any anti-gay amendment or legislation is defeated."
- U.S. Senate testimony by Gov. Mitt Romney, 6/22/2004 P>

and then this.....

"Romney announces he won't fill judicial vacancies before term ends
Despite his rhetoric about judicial activism, Romney announced that
he won't fill all the remaining vacancies during his term - but instead
leave them for his liberal Democrat successor!

Governor Mitt Romney pledged yesterday not to make a flurry of lame-duck
judicial appointments in the final days of his administration . . . David Yas,
editor of Lawyers Weekly, said Romney is "bucking tradition" by resisting the urge to
fill all remaining judgeships. "It is a tradition for governors to use that power to appoint judges
aggressively in the waning moments of their administration," Yas said.
He added that Romney has been criticized for failing to make judicial appointments.
"The legal community has consistently criticized him for not filling open seats quickly enough
and being a little too painstaking in the process and being dismissive of the input of the
Judicial Nominating Commission," Yas said.

Romney uses his RomneyBOTs to mercilessly attack the GOP conservatives all month.

What a POS Romney is. He supports Obama, even helped put Obama in office,
and spends millions to attack the GOP while offering
a few thousand here and there as 'plausible deniability'.

First I agree with many who say that there is no clear front runner, as I expected the vote to be,

Having said that let me be positive regarding the various candidates:

1)Romney can organize young people and college students and is a major player. I have never doubted that.

2)Jindal did very well considering he was criticized for his rebuttal speech and being present.

3)Sarah Palin, without being present, shows she is still a major player.

4)People may look at Ron Paul as eccentric but there is no denying that he has support among libertarians.

5)Newt Gingrich still has a following, especially among conservatives inspired by ideas.

Meanwhile Gov. Palin’s son is serving in a Stryker Brigade in Iraq, his unit recently suffering three casualties.

Let’s not go crazy now. He is driving the General around. He is probably getting a doggy bag from all the fancy parties his boss goes to. I know that commander’s take care of their drivers.

The RomneyBOT napscoordinator offers 'faint praise' and actually uses the military to smear Gov. Palin.

In the News/Activism forum, on a thread titled Gallup: Palin top choice of Republicans to run in 2012,
napscoordinator wrote:
"(Romney) ran a multi-million dollar company from the ground up. He saved the Olympics. He is the best we have for the economy. As governor he was able to go from a budget deficite to a budget surplus. He might be sketchy on social issues which I don’t believe but it seems you do. He is the Reagan of our times and you are willing to waste it away picking canidates that are weak (McCain) and allowing the Democrats to win. Not a good strategy my friends."

Like so many RomneyBOTs, this and last month have been a time for attacks on the GOP and Gov. Palin.

Connect the dots...... Just like in 2007 and 2008, all the HATE and dirty tricks lead back to TeamROMNEY.
Review the attacks this week, FReepers. HOW MANY MUST OCCUR BEFORE IT IS NOT CO-INCIDENCE?

Dan Gilgoff is a Romney supporter, fresh
off the bench and in to attack Gov. Palin this month, for backstabber Carpetbagger RINO Mitt Romney.
There are enough attacks against Gov. Palin that this effort is concerted (p < .0001)

Dan Gilgoff: "Bobby Jindal, Catholic, Draws the Same "Secret Muslim" Allegations That Haunted Obama"
February 24, 2009 - I'm surprised that a few comments on my post about Bobby Jindal as the new face of
Christian conservatism allege that he's got ancestral Muslim roots, in addition to the acknowledged
Hinduism of his Indian born parents.
Remind you of any other recent rumor campaigns against promising young minority politicians?
What's surprising is that some of the comments appear to be from pro-Sarah Palin conservatives."

BZZZZZZT: The Real Deal is otherwise.

Dan Gilgoff, May 8, 2007, "A seat at Romney's table"
"If the next Republican to occupy the White House must follow that same strategy,
Mitt Romney, former Massachusetts governor, may be in much better shape than polls suggest.
..At last week's debate, Romney went furthest in speaking the language of the Christian Right, ...
Romney's also meeting with evangelical leaders,
even sending them wooden chairs mounted with plaques declaring,
"You are welcome at our table anytime."

Gilgoff: "Bigoted Redneck Evangelicals Stopped the Nomination of Marvelous Mitt
.... I’m so offended at the suggestion of Dan Gilgoff in USA Today
that the reason that Mitt Romney lost is because we Evangelicals just couldn’t bring ourselves to vote for a Mormon.
I’ve followed the national conversation among Conservative Christians about Mitt Romney.
Little of it centered on his Mormonism, much more on the fact of his shift on the issues."

Dan Gilgoff Romney propagandist: "("A Massachusetts Conservative," U.S. News & World Report, 2/12/07)
Romney ... (w)ith a Democratic-controlled state legislature, he managed to
balance the budget without raising taxes."
[Romney called the tax increases "fees", and even raised them in NH !!!]

Joe Scarborough is yet another Romney supporter,
in to attack Gov. Palin this month, for backstabber RINO Mitt Romney.

"Pat Buchanan asks Ziegler who were the main culprits in the media attack against Palin,
and Joe Scarborough interrupted Ziegler and would not let him answer!"

"Scarborough: Romney Won Debate"
"Mitt Romney Absolutely Dominated"

"Joe Scarborough losing more and more sleep over McCain
"John McCain is ruining Joe Scarborough’s life. Joe can’t sleep or eat.
His man Romney is now showing 15 points behind McCain nationally.
Joe is sick over it. How could the good republicans of this nation vote for such a liberal.
He aims to do something about it. He doesn’t know what yet, but dammit,
Romney is going to be President if he has his way about it. He knows the real Mitt.
He knows Mitt simply lied to get elected in MA. He doesn’t know why he lied, and he doesn’t care."

More dots...... Carol Platt Liebau is yet another Romney supporter,
in to attack Gov. Palin this month, for backstabber Carpetbagger RINO Mitt Romney.
"Mitt Romney has been the most consistently excellent debater overall in the two meetings of the Republican candidates.
He is personable, clearly well informed, incredibly well-funded, and surrounded by a crack staff.
All that, taken together, goes far to explain why his numbers in Iowa -- and elsewhere -- are looking better and better."

"But the other candidate who's very compelling is Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney."

Even more dots...... Douglas Kmiec is yet another Romney supporter from the Romney Keep,
in to attack on the GOP, for backstabber Carpetbagger RINO Mitt Romney.
"Romney supporter turned Obama man Douglas Kmiec indulged in quite a litany of name-calling,
finger pointing and demagoguery against the GOP that would have been amazing from the same man only one year ago.
Kmiec has shown that he no longer cares much how he is viewed, going full Democrat Partisan at this point.
"

"Kmiec was named by Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney
to head the Romney for President Committee
on the Courts and the Constitution in 2007."

Surprise. Surprise. Connect the dots......
Cal Thomas is yet another Romney supporter,
in to attack Gov. Palin this month, for backstabber Carpetbagger RINO Mitt Romney.
"Cal’s Surprising Suggestion: ‘I Wish The Palins Would Leave The Stage For Awhile’"

"Romney obviously hopes that a growing number of Americans
accept the view of Cal Thomas, a popular journalist and an evangelical."

"Writing in his syndicated column, Cal Thomas commended Romney
for standing "on principle" and putting "more noble things ahead of self-interest." "

"Peeking Out From the McCain Wreckage: Mitt Romney"

"Someone's got to say it: IS MITT ROMNEY RESPONSIBLE FOR OBAMA'S VICTORY?"

"Vanity: Team Romney Sabotaged Palin and Continuing to Do So?"

"Romney Supporters Trashing Palin"

"Romney advisors sniping at Palin?"

Similar to Romney's other scortched earth tactics:

Novak: "Fred Thompson drop-out rumors traced to Romney campaign"

Said Novak: "The rumors were traced in part to Mitt Romney's campaign,
trying to stir up strife between McCain and Thompson
."

"Despite outspending his rivals by huge margins throughout the primaries,
(Mitt Romney, Carpetbagger UT,CA,MA,NH,Mexico) lost Iowa, South Carolina, Florida and California.
The only primaries he won were in Michigan, where Dad was governor; LDS states;
and a few states on Super Tuesday in which his California-obsessed rivals
couldn't spare the cash to advertise.
Only John Connolly in 1968 had a worse cash-to-delegates ratio.
And John McCain rightly did not like Romney's tactics during the primaries.
(W)hen (Romney's early leads) started slipping away, he resorted to unfair,
distorted, scorched-earth negative ads, betting that his opponents couldn't
afford to spend enough for the truth to catch up to his charges."

I have to tell you though, today watching Rush’s speech that has got to be one of the best speeches in conservatism I’ve heard in a long-time. If a politician wants a blue-print for going out and communicating with voters, they’d better study this speech long and hard.

Exactly right. It wasn't just for the CPAC crowd.

“However, many conservatives are realizing that Mitt Romney was the best choice of what we had available in last year’s primary”

And this is the main reason he will be the next nominee. On paper the list of reasons not to nominate McCain last year dwarfed that of all the other candidates, but he still won. Why? Because people were unhappy with Bush, and going back to your quote, it was fresh on everyone’s mind that they had picked Bush over McCain.

On paper the newcomers can be the perfect Conservatives but the GOP primary voter will not support them unless they`ve had years of exposure to them to develop a sense of familiarity. The voters deserted Fred Thompson last year when it dawned on them that he was not the character they were familiar with from the sitcom. His positions did not change between August and January.

The one thing that is relevant coming out of this straw poll is that Romney beat Huckabee by a wide margin. All else is diversionary and will keep people talking and debating between now and the aftermath of the Iowa caucus, when reality will intrude into the process and the “perfect” candidates will begin to drop out.

Your are wrong about the facts.

First:

FRee Republic Member Opinion
WINNER - Thompson 66.8% 1,658
LOSER --- Romney 12.7% 315

Post Election Rasmussen poll - GOP voters:
WINNER - Palin -- 64%
LOSER --- Huckabee -- 12%
LOSER --- Romney -- 11%

Second, FReepers have carefully watched what Romney has done.
Romney betrayed the GOP, over and over and over.

Novak: Fred Thompson drop-out rumors traced to Romney campaign

Said Novak: The rumors were "traced in part to Mitt Romney's campaign,
trying to stir up strife between McCain and Thompson

Romney, on the question if any of his five sons were serving in the military, and if not, how they plan to support the war against terrorism:

"The good news is that we have a volunteer Army and that's the way we're going to keep it," Romney told the crowd, adding, "One of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping to get me elected, because they think I'd be a great president."

The words that come to mind are delusions of grandeur, hubris and pompous arrogance. We don't need someone like this for Commander in Chief and his money won't buy him the Presidency.

If Willard is such an economic wizzard he'd figure out that running for the White House will be a waste.
