Bush a four-letter word at CPAC By: Andy Barr February 28, 2009 07:01 AM EST
Conservatives arent sure whos the Republican presidential frontrunner in 2012. They disagree over how sharply to attack President Barack Obama and on the question of whether a back-to-basics approach is the path back to majority.
But if theres one thing those attending the annual Conservative Political Action Conference this week agree on, it is this: They dont want another George W. Bush.
Few come out right out and say it, but they dont have to. Theres no nostalgia for the past eight years, no tributes to Bush and no sessions dedicated to exploring his presidency.
Indeed, for a president who publicly embraced conservative principles, there is little evidence that the movement returns the sentiment.
When the subject of the 43rd president has come up at CPACwhere he spoke each year of his presidencyits usually been in an unflattering context.
Conservative icon Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker, railed against the Bush-Obama continuity in economic policy and the Bush-Obama big spending program in a speech Friday.
"We had big spending under Bush and now we have big spending under Obama," Gingrich said. "And so now we have two failures."
He wasnt the only high-profile conservative taking shots at the former president.

“Be so much betterf for us all if one of our cities was glowing.”
Exactly.
We can criticize President Bush on this or that issue, some well deserved, but he served under the most unique circumstances in US history. Never before were we in a position where our own cities/homeland were subject to attack at any given moment by s small cabal of dedicated terrorists. Yet, not another city was hit after 9/11.
Reviewing the Bush Presidency now is way too premature. Primarily because most of what was done to save our sorry arses won’t be known for decades.
We are only one month into the new regime, and given their start, they will hang themselves before long.
The only way the Republican Party can come back is to divorce itself from the big government, open border “come one and come all” Bush administration.
If we had the political resolve, we could get over the big spending in a couple of years.
The “glowing” part - that’d take a lot longer!
Ever since Gingrich caved and ran like a scared bunny rabbit from the Democrat DC press corps back in ‘96 when they were wringing their hands about - - horrors! (yawn) - - a “government shutdown”, I haven’t had much respect for the guy.
That was a disgrace. Whew. Talk about “snatching defeat from the jaws of victory”....
You detected the pattern. A bad Republican President,
begets a Dem President.
Bush did some very good things, but was a miserable leader
overall and not a Conservative. He is the major reason
there is a Dem Congress and a Dem President.
Amen. Exactly. A TRUE CONSERVATIVE does NOT hand over the entire government to socialists in all three branches of government.
It's this kind of stupidity that will keep everybody shaking their heads at Huck. If he is stupid enough to buy into the liberal Democrat talking point / lie that FEMA was supposed to be a "first responder", then he is too stupid for elective office. Of course, Bush's cowardly unwillingness to stand up and defend himself - - taking the blame for a natural disaster is a perfect example - - is one of the main reasons we are now stuck with this scumbag, President Dumbo.
Right.
“True” conservatives suck their thumbs and stay home on election day as a means of punishing imperfect Republicans, thus, ceding victory to liberals and (in this case) Marxists.
” Petty, jealous and sanctimonious: Ya hit the tri-fecta!”
Cedric, what part of my post did I get wrong? Is Limbaugh’s less than sterling past unknown? Was Operation Chaos a rousing success? Did you happen to listen to “Its all about me” Limbaugh, lets see, oh...yesterday? Will America follow a man who threatens to leave the country for the Bahamas with his $400,000,000.00 while his listeners are losing their jobs and homes?
Cedric, I don’t care about “petty, jealous and sanctimonious”. I care about winning and having won, displaying as much fidelity to our ideology as Obama and his minions do to theirs.
I think we probably have some areas of agreement regarding Limbaugh.
But problems with his ego, personal life and wealth are not among them.
“I think we probably have some areas of agreement regarding Limbaugh.

Fair enough!
I agree, I’d take another 4 years of President Bush over 4 years of the Obamao in .0003 seconds.
I can understand their being politik, I do think they should mention the good with the bad though, to just Bash Bush is unseemly and counter productive.
Give us Sarah. She is the only alternative left for the republicans and America. Otherwise the next 80 years will be a wash.
‘Indeed, for a president who publicly embraced conservative principles, there is little evidence that the movement returns the sentiment.’-LIAR
and that’s our problem..
Any GOP President that flat out loses the Congress for the GOP is a failed one IMHO. What hurt this country most is all the losses that we suffered in Congress. We lost way too many good senators in O6 and 08. That left us with nothing to fight the craziness that is not with us.
We can not stop anything and the RATS know it.
Newt is really the last one I want to hear from when it comes to pandering the evil side.

I bet ‘Global Varming’ made you say that. :-]
I'm not following you're last line here? What's the "one" you're referring too.
I do think Bush provided protection...
From what I understand (and am willing to be corrected), even the Dems won’t actually be able to SPEND the money they voted on. With a fiscally conservative dominated Congress in ‘11, we might be able to recover and get things back on track.
With reductions in military/security spending so we can ‘give’ everyone nationalized health care, and other social spending, it’s going to be a lot easier for the terrorists to regroup and, potentially, set an American city aglow.
Not at all. We fight for the best candidate and do our
best to win. I worked the phones for Juan McAmnesty and
voted for him. I voted for a very good man Sen. Talent
here in MO. I believe Talent was a victim of Bush fatigue.
So please don’t give me that crap just because I dare point
out the truth about King George.
