Bush a four-letter word at CPAC By: Andy Barr February 28, 2009 07:01 AM EST
Conservatives arent sure whos the Republican presidential frontrunner in 2012. They disagree over how sharply to attack President Barack Obama and on the question of whether a back-to-basics approach is the path back to majority.
But if theres one thing those attending the annual Conservative Political Action Conference this week agree on, it is this: They dont want another George W. Bush.
Few come out right out and say it, but they dont have to. Theres no nostalgia for the past eight years, no tributes to Bush and no sessions dedicated to exploring his presidency.
Indeed, for a president who publicly embraced conservative principles, there is little evidence that the movement returns the sentiment.
When the subject of the 43rd president has come up at CPACwhere he spoke each year of his presidencyits usually been in an unflattering context.
Conservative icon Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker, railed against the Bush-Obama continuity in economic policy and the Bush-Obama big spending program in a speech Friday.
"We had big spending under Bush and now we have big spending under Obama," Gingrich said. "And so now we have two failures."
He wasnt the only high-profile conservative taking shots at the former president.

Be so much betterf or us all if one of our cities was glowing.

There will be some things on the fringe that will be causes for dissension, but on the 10 or so major points there will be agreement. And on five of those there will be total agreement.
This thing of trying to be all things to all people, or at least enough people to win an election has not worked. Period, end of discussion. That's how we got a Bob Dole and John McCain.
Make the list, and invite those who agree to join the club. The others can start their own club.
exactly right, he was even ready to jump on the global warming band wagon last Spring before the gas prices went through the roof. He can back and fill all he wants, the visual of his sitting on the couch with Pelosi is still there.
President Bush certainly deserves credit for not allowing that to happen, he was a fine CIC.
Unfortunately, Bush was a moderate, big spending doofus! He basically cornered the conservative republicans into following him down this idiotic road.
Conservatives should now understand what the consequences wrought and get back on track. State your values and principles, stand by them no matter what the consequences of the DBM hype, liberal screaming meme's, or electorate voting habits.
Amen.
“You know what kind of conservatives we need most? Competent conservatives, Huckabee said in a speech Thursday. Its when we lose our competence, that Americans lose their confidence.”
Its not helping that the GOP is now increasingly identified with the likes of a strident Limbaugh and the tin foil hat crowd more concerned with conspiracy theories about the last election and the “Marxist” “foreigner” in the White House than with serious, thinking leaders with cogent, well thought out AND PRESENTED ideas for dealing with the economic collapse the Bush/Wall Street crowd left us. Huckabee is right. America has clearly lost confidence in the GOP and of late it seems that the party is only making matters worse.
Truth is a bitter pill..... I too am reluctant to accept the new Newt, yet he is correct in what he says....and no one says it better.

I agree this would work and get us unified so we can win.
Yessssssssss. Biggest tax-cuts. unabashedly Pro-Life. Roberts & Alito. Freedom to 50 million "muslims".
Just to say a few of Bush's faults.
he held off the cap and trade long enough for the global warming crowd to see their shark jumped by the current cooling trend. He saved so much more than we would have been taxed had Gore taken over in ‘00 that they ought to be singing his praises for that alone.
It’s time for Republicans to quit talking about the failures of the past and to come up with a NEW energizing agenda - something like a Contract With America, and then promote this positive message on every corner. The Democrats, through TV commercials, are already portraying the Republicans as the party of “No.” If the pubbies don’t get aggressive, forget 2010 or 2012.
So in order to make themselves so intellectually superior, some conservatives have to bash President Bush.
Classless.........IMO
Living in sight of the WTC, I find their lack of praise for keeping us safe simply pathetic.
President Bush’s so called excess spending went on educating the poorest children and making sure elders got medication before their lives were totally compromised.
Guess all the true conservatives are happy now that Bush is gone from office.
