The American Society of Newspaper Editors, citing the "challenging times faced by its members," announced Friday that it was canceling its 2009 convention.
it had also become clear that attendance in Chicago would have been "significantly" lower than at previous conventions.
The ASNE was founded in 1922. The group said the last time it failed to hold an convention was in 1945 during World War II.
The US newspaper industry is facing an unprecedented crisis with print advertising revenue declining, circulation dropping and readers migrating to free news online.
The announcement of the Rocky Mountain News' closure came just days after publishing group Hearst Corp said it may shutter the San Francisco Chronicle if staff of the newspaper did not agree to "significant" job cuts.
Hearst announced in January that it plans to close its money-losing Seattle newspaper, the Post-Intelligencer, if a buyer cannot be found.
Philadelphia Newspapers, owner of the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News, filed for bankruptcy protection on Sunday.
Tribune Co., owner of The Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and six other dailies, filed for bankruptcy in December and a Minnesota newspaper, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, filed for bankruptcy in January.

Oh heavens! Whatever shall I use when house-breaking pups?
I saw that story this afternoon, but I was busy messing with the tea party stuff and didn’t have time to post it. Excellent news!
Next thing, they’ll figure out there’s no need in having “journalism” schools any more.
So they are cancelling a convention where they’re supposed to recite love poems to Obama for 3 days straight? Awwwwwwwww....
Maybe O can get them some stimulus money.
Hmmmmmm. Having they tried pushing their content further to the Left? Perhaps that would help their circulation ...
I haven’t read a news paper in years. I don’t watch television ,can’t stand the talking heads or commercials. Liberal journalist make me ill.
Whereas a large portion of every landfill is used for discarded newspapers and
Whereas the production of newspapers causes trees to be cut down, hauled by polluting trucks to polluting paper mills, and hauled from paper mills to publishers and
Whereas the production of newspapers requires toxic ink and solvents and energy wasting machinery and
Whereas the distribution of newspapers requires the use of dirty internal combustion engines Therefore:
Be it resolved that a Newsprint tax, of $1,000.00 per pound, be charged to EVERY newspaper with a daily subscription, within the United States!
We should get some Republican to propose THIS as an amendment to any cap and trade or carbon tax proposal that comes up!
It would show up the coal-hating, energy -hating Communists for what they are: Pure Hypocrites!
Good point ...
Well, there'll always be a place for Mark Morford. Right under a stranger in a bath house.
WOW.
I chose the wrong field, evidently. This doesn’t surprise me at all, though. In fact, years ago I suspected the demise of newspapers. I sat in many meetings with ad directors, CEOS, publishers, and asked what they thought were “silly” questions about how 24/7 cable, and the internet, could be a threat. They laughed at me.
I work at home now, freelance, and my markets are disappearing.
I have been thinking for some time I need to further my education, enter the future in computing, and maybe even go into a new field. I’m through thinking about it, plan to enroll in college. BTW, I was lucky enough to work at home and freelance, but am still young enough to need a skill in demand, as I may have to enter the workforce again.
What courses are required to be a “community organizer?” There seems to be opportunities for advancement in this field (LOL).
Obama worship, lies, and endless democrat party talking points is NOT A BUSINESS MODEL.
Just die, already. You bore me, dead tree liberal media.

When my magazine went under this fall, I thought I was out of a job, but the publishers kept me on to write a lot of ad printwork -- trifolds, postcards, brochures, etc. As I was doing that, we suddenly got a bunch of orders for websites. We've done quite a few now and I'm starting to get a knack for it. The pay's decent and the work is fairly easy (if you're used to writing thousands of words every day).
I know you're doing freelance book editing, but if these trends continue, website writing may be something to look into.
Oh, and by the way, as soon as the SF Chronicle goes under, I'm throwing a party! LOL!
Hard to bitch about financial firms rewarding their productive agents, brokers and employees, when the MSM is doing the same thing, huh?
I’m not sure why failing companies trying to force-fit a 100 year out-of-date business model is considered a “crisis”, but oh well...
I think newsprint is the biggest waste of energy and resources there is.
