A British school that staged a gay version of Romeo and Juliet - called Romeo and Julian - has been accused of 'mind-blowing' political correctness.
The play, which was performed by teenagers at a mixed school in east London to coincide with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) History Month, has caused a stir in parliament.
Drama teacher Jo Letson reworked Shakespeare's play to challenge 'homophobia and homophobic bullying'.
The version was praised by actor Sir Ian McKellen when he saw it last month, reports The Telegraph.
Calling for a debate on political correctness during questions on upcoming Commons business, Tory MP Philip Davies said: "This is mind-blowing.
"Anyone with an ounce of sense would want their children to be learning Romeo and Juliet rather than Romeo and Julian."
The MP for Shipley in Yorkshire added: "Romeo and Juliet is one of the greatest works ever written. It is a play that every child should study.
"It is very worrying that this literary masterpiece is being used for such a politically-correct purpose."
However, Commons leader Harriet Harman rebuked him, saying: "I seem to remember that in Shakespearean times, boys would play girls and girls would play boys and the whole point was trying work out which was which.
"There is going to be a debate next Thursday about new equality legislation so we can ensure everybody in this country is treated with fairness, respect and not subject to prejudice and discrimination - and indeed cheap shots - from you."
The play was performed by students aged 14 to 16 at Leytonstone School last month.
It doesn't work. The reason being that there is no genetic motivation for the Montagues and Capulets to object to the marriage, which is the crux of the problem in "Romeo and Juliet." If Romeo and Juliet have a child, the two families have a genetic reason to stop fighting.
Gay marriage can't produce offspring so "Romeo and Ed" is a play with, literally, no plot.

Lefty British politician Harriet Harman is a perfect example of what has helped bring England to it's knees. The leftist mania for alleged 'equality' and politicians like Harman pushing it as if this gender-switching drivel were somehow relevant to the nation. Meanwhile, Labor party politicians like Harman push for more and more 'rights' for those engaging in homosexual behavior. This way lies madness. What happened to the British?

Which sometimes resulted in a boy playing a girl who was pretending to be a boy.
But there was never any doubt in the mind of the audience as to the sex of the actor.
Only those salacious Frenchies allowed women on stage. As we all know, actresses are all whores. (Actually, at the time they pretty much were.)
Come to think of it, not all that much has changed in that regard.

Women were not allowed perform on public stages until 1660.

Sometimes boy actors would play the role of girls, pretending to be boys. But, no actual girls were on stage.
Harman has probably confused her Shakespeare with British pantomime — which does feature a lot of cross-dressing (with actual female actors on stage too).
He wanted to give up the young boys but he just couldn't kick the hobbit.
Just what do gays want? I always thought gays simply wanted to hang out in their own clubs and occasionally bugger each other. Now, it seems, they are forcing their way of life on the kindhearted and unwary.
I believe the entire gay community is being exploited by the left for political advantage. If gays believed in smaller govt, lower taxes and school choice, they wouldn’t be the darlings of the MSM.
