Now we see why the libs wanted the Fairness Doctrine. They would force unpopular libtalk on the airwaves. It can't compete in the free market. (So: taxpayer funded NPR on FM, and a FD-imposed Air America on AM).

Think of all the libs in D.C.--and the "progressive talk" station finishes in 38th place (fourth from the bottom) in listeners 12 and over. No wonder the format changed!

So why can’t libs buy their own radio channel. Oh wait, that’s what they tried to do and were a miserable failure at.

What about including NPR.

NPR seems to be generally quite successful for market share (compared to AA) and being a liberal talk radio for those so inclined. So a balance to commercial talk radio already exists.

It isn’t meant to force lib-talk on the air (it’s already there), FD is meant to force conservative viewpoints off the air.

Lib-talk has proven that it is not viable. FD makes ALL talk radio non-viable.

If lib radio can’t make it in DC, it can’t make it anywhere. Forcing lib talk via the “fairness doctrine” will further damage the radio industry. When “fairness” is implemented it will be in the form of even distribution to blacks, muslims etc as owners. Because of their lack of know how, they’ll refuse conservative talk. As a result they’ll die a slow painful death.

The NPR format isn’t talk radio but they are a great example of localism.

Our local NPR station has a classical music/news/variety format. Sure the news and variety or liberal but there is no “critical discussion of current events”.

Fourth from the bottom?? What were the other three radio formats. Let me guess The 39th was Yiddish Salsa music, the 40th Spanish Polka music and the 41st - 24/7 of the best of 'The Al Franken Show'? Am I right??

Message from the new USSA (United Socialist States of America)Ministry of Propaganda (MOP).

“For the past 20 years, fascist Conservative talk radio has dominated the airwaves. Therefore, realizing that this was grossly unfair to those in the Progressive talk radio business, we are hereby prohibiting any radio programs promoting a politically conservative viewpoint. All previously broadcast conservative talk radio programs will be replaced by the Voice of Air America. And you WILL listen.”

It also begs the question as to how much support there really is for such a leftist agenda that is being foisted upon us.
Air America was supposed to show us how strong and articulate and intellectual and just AMAZING the leftist thought was, especially compared to the moronic, simplistic sub-human conservative thought being aired on the radio. There wasn't an audience, except in the town where I live.
The whole Air America fiasco was a fraud. It makes me wonder just how much vote fraud elects the leftists in power.

Yes and the libs are claiming that it isn’t the reason we’re
opposing it...no, they just want equal time, that’s all.

John Kerry has at least $700 million (thanks to the wife).
Surely he can buy a Boston radio station and make it Air
America. “Can I..get me an FCC license here?” :) And it would do even better than WWRC did in Washington D.C. Why...
it might be 34th! 33rd, even! in the ratings!

I was just on a radio mailing list and someone who works for a conservative station in Boston said that Rush was fanning the flames of the Fairness Doctrine to get ratings, and
“he’s an entertainer and does it well”. Air America tried to
get an entertainer, too...remember him? Last I heard the guy was trying to become Senator in Minnesota. Yup! Him. And I had to laugh when I scanned a lib message board and a _liberal_ said they were sorry but they just couldn’t listen to “...the molasses-dripped voice of Al Franken”.

That was the best they could do? Oh, and Randi Rhodes (now
with Nova M—oops, now unemployed) and Jerry Springer
and Janeane Garofolo. Entertainers, all.

And the sheeple nod as if they understand. The pols know all along that said "equal time" is never going to be available because there will be no talk radio.

Judging by her performance in this season of 24, I don’t see how anyone can call Janeane Garafolo an entertainer.

(I’m guessing the other stations under them are from other cities
and barely reach D.C.)

It’s very telling that even in liberal places, that liberal talk radio doesn’t do well. And conservative talkers get good ratings in liberal cities as well as conservative places around the country.

There are millions of liberal / progressive / radical / enviro activists / gay activists / feminist / minority activists. They helped elect a strongly Democrat congress and Democrat president. But in the marketplace of ideas, and presenting their point of view in the talk or call-in show format, liberals just can’t compete.

Could part of it be because liberals just haven’t thought things through? A lack of critical thinking skills so that they don’t know what to think when challenged?

Rush, Hannity, etc. regularly take calls from liberals and have a dialogue back and forth. And generally they poke holes in the liberal point of view. But they do it with reasoned arguments and support their position with facts and reasoned thinking. The liberal mind seems to have trouble with critical thinking about the issues of the day.

And such was the case with Boston (I know, I’ve mentioned it before it bears repeating):

Oct 2004: Clear Channel converts WKOX (Spanish) and WXKS
(nostalgia) to Air America. Ratings are awful for 2 years

Dec 2006: Clear Channel pulls the plug on liberal talk and
makes them “Rumba”, Spanish music

Dec 2008: After a two year effort to get “progressive talk”
back on, a local group PAYS WWZN (sports) to run two
shows, a local one in the morning and one from the west coast at 6 pm. A third, syndicated show is to be added
in January. Again, they must PAY to get on.

In BOSTON.

Jan 2009: The midday syndicated show doesn’t show up.
The other two shows suddenly disappear and a contract
dispute is rumored. The morning show does return but the
evening show is said to be off until after the college
basketball season ends in late March.

Meanwhile, in liberal New England, progressive talk’s
success story is such that it only exists in southeast
Vermont and Western MA.

Liberal stations in other cities have switched.

Boston—to Spanish
Providence—to conservative talk
New Haven—ESPN
Portland ME—sports
Burlington VT—women’s talk
