One bill would establish a summer program for kids to serve in an organized community project. Another would allow high-school students to spend a semester getting academic credit for volunteering.

And, about that HIGH SCHOOL volunteer work....I have a step granddaughter who had to have volunteer work credits....so she babysat for family friends....it's a SCAM....and it's NOT VOLUNTEER!!! It's forced.

When the San Diego City schools tried to force high school students to perform "volunteer work" to graduate, my son took them to task. He appeared on both Rick Roberts and Roger Hedgecock's shows to argue that this was involuntary servitude and prohibited by the 13th Amendment. He made his case. The school district backed down.

Some schools now require a certain amount of volunteer hours in community service to graduate with “honors”... and the National Honor Society has required it for some time now (don’t know if it is a local or National thing).
