Mugabe has Ruined Africa's Beacon of Hope (Bishhops Rowan Williams and John Sentamu's Piece)

Churches in Zimbabwe are working to feed and heal a nation abandoned by its leaders

Twenty-five years ago, people involved in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa would say wistfully: “Look at Zimbabwe. It's come through a bitter war of liberation without wrecking its social cohesion, it's developed a proper democratic culture and it's feeding itself.”

Granted, this was, even then, a slightly too rosy picture, but it wasn't nonsense. It represented a conviction that Zimbabwe was showing what was possible to its neighbours and indeed to the whole continent.

And this means that one of the worst of the countless casualties inflicted by Robert Mugabe on his wretched country is the destruction of many people's hopes, both in Zimbabwe itself and throughout Africa. The continent can't afford more failed states, mass hunger, contempt for the rule of law. And how much more painful it is when a country has been held up as a sign of promise.

We have been witnessing the slow death of a people. And slow death is only intermittently newsworthy; nothing to report except more of the same, so the temptation is to switch off. But this doesn't mean that the need for hope is any less urgent on the ground.

In the past couple of years, the churches in Zimbabwe have shown signs of coming together in a cohesive way to challenge the tyranny of the Government and the apathy of neighbours. The Anglican Church has been through a quiet revolution, finally expelling discredited bishops and rallying around leaders of real stature such as the Bishop of Harare. And it has paid a heavy price. Anglican churches and congregations have been targeted by government-sponsored thugs while parishioners have been harassed, beaten and arrested.

Gee, I wonder who supported Mugabe for all those years,
certainly not the Anglican Church. Certainly not.
When Mugabe and his thugs were murdering white farmers and driving them off their lands-it was the Anglican Church with a firm and steadfast resolution objected-oh my mistake I guess the church was silent.

Liberal whites in Europe and America sold Zimbabwe/Rhodesia down the river which harmed blacks and whites in the country. Mugabe is O’s kindered spirit.

Sad isn’t it? What is really happening is the last vestigages of a modern country are being looted until they fail, soon enough all that will be left is Tribalism only contained by borders that others have drawn for them to remain within.

In a nutshell...back to neolithicism for Zimbabwe

Coming soon to the US thanks to Zero, who has an identical philosophy and even more grandiose ambitions than Mugabe ever did...

South Africa better hope it’s not next. A good example for them would be to do the opposite of everything Obama’s doing.

Zimbabwe, formally known as Rhodesia, used to be the jewel crown of Africa. It was one of the most modern and developed countries, some say almost rivaling US standards.

Unfortunately, this is another example of what happens when white society is tossed aside.

Happens in every country where whites are demonized and blacks take over.

Yes, I said it. Prove this point wrong with an example to the contrary. You cant!

Zimbabwe and the rest of post-colonial post-white guilt Africa. Let’s not kid ourselves, the European powers attempted to civilize the primitive, barbaric continent, and by withdrawing, they failed. All cultures are not equal, after all. Duh!

Another success story of the leftists in the USA and other western countries.

The killing and slaughtering has been going on there since 1972 and the country has become poorer and poorer every year since black rule began in 1980.

And the hand wringing in the west continues.

The collapse of civilization in post colonial, black run countries is worth some study.
Some places in the USA are following the same path and it is only the constant infusion of massive federal support that keeps things somewhat in check.

Hmmmm, I don’t recall St. Paul protesting and fighting the reign of the Emperor Nero either...though eventually he did lose his head over it.

I didn’t know it was any Church’s job to involve itself in politics.

No, each country must find it’s own destiny.
