GOP governors turn down $66M in aid for jobless.
MONTGOMERY - Despite Alabama's rising jobless rate, Gov. Bob Riley on Monday rejected $66 million in the federal economic stimulus funds earmarked to help states fund unemployment benefits.
Riley made the announcement after returning from a National Governors Association meeting in Washington, where he and other governors met with President Barack Obama Sunday night.
An influential legislator accused Riley of playing politics, along with other Republican governors in the South.
But Riley said the stimulus law requires states to change their laws to expand jobless benefits to those who don't normally qualify, such as those who work part time or who leave their job for a "compelling family reason."
Riley said that provision could cause a tax increase on Alabama employers, and potentially their employees, when the stimulus dollars expire.

I thought I heard on the radio, yesterday, that he was going to accept the $$$.
I also wonder if we are going to declare our sovereignty along with other states.
Unfunded mandate -- classic Democrat Federal power grab.
Roll, Tide Roll!
Testing the Alabama ping list...
Received the ping.
In the interest of equal time, War Damn Eagle!
That too!
I’m just glad to see some states showing some SPINE!
Would that my beloved Commonwealth were still run by REAL men... but alas, it appears I now reside in a “blue” state.
Is anything being done in that direction?
I have read of other states doing that. Does anyone have a list of those states?
BO must think he is King, and that he can write states’ laws from Washington, D C, in Queen Pelosi’s Porkulus Bill.
Every state should reject this unamerican notion, but those with begging bowls out will not see anything but the federal gruel being handed out. We should expect governors who are smarter to reject this power grab from Washington.
It works! Thanks for putting one together!
Thanks, and good job!
I have noticed that we are not one of the states. I believe the reason why is because our legislature has dems in the majority. We have also have more rinos than you could believe at the state gov level. The people of the state are still very conservative, the govt is not. Riley is about as conservative as we will get for leadership in this state. I hope we find a good candidate for gov next year and get on the same page.
That's a joke son .......... get it “D.” I said “play politics,” it's a joke son.
Our Slitherer-in-Chief RINO Charlie Crist, took the money.
Given the size of Florida I’m sure it was a big chunk of change. The funny thing is that it was reported last night it would raise unemployment “pay” a whopping $25 a week.
Man. That’s barely a case of beer. If we add that to Obama’s $13 a week in stimulus money that’s a whopping $38 a week! Woohoo!
Oops. But you only get the stimulus money if you’re employed. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted.
Bama ping loud and clear
“Received the ping.”
Same here
Isn’t Knight the poverty pimp who said that property and income taxes must go up to make up for the budget shortfall in Montgomery County?
IIRC, the city of Montgomery has the third highest sales tax in the country, and they wonder why people shop elsewhere.
