Boehner Condemns Provision Tucked in Democrats’ Secret $410 Billion Spending Bill to Kill D.C. School Choice Program

Language Designed to Eliminate Program Was Kept Secret by Democratic Congressional Leaders for Weeks, Never Passed by Committee

Washington, Feb 23

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today condemned a provision tucked into Congressional Democrats’ $410 billion “omnibus” spending bill that would phase out the District of Columbia’s groundbreaking school choice program, which has provided educational opportunities for thousands of inner-city children since it was established with bipartisan support in 2004. Boehner issued the following statement:

“The D.C. school choice program has provided hope for thousands of low-income children in the District of Columbia since it was established, and has been demonstrating results when it comes to parental satisfaction and increased parental involvement. Eliminating this program would represent an irresponsible and shameful act on the part of the Democratic leadership in Congress, and the children of the District of Columbia deserve better.

“The American people, whose hard-earned money is being spent without the transparency and accountability they were promised by the Democratic majority, also deserve better. Nearly three weeks ago, Republicans asked the Democratic leadership to put this bill online so the American people would have adequate time to review it. They declined to do so, and now we know why. What other unpleasant surprises have Democratic congressional leaders tucked into the text of this massive legislation on behalf of their special-interest political allies?”

NOTE: Last December, Boehner joined other GOP colleagues in sending a letter to Democratic leaders on the House and Senate Appropriations Committee urging them to support the program, as passed by the House of Representatives last year. The Heritage Foundation last week released an analysis providing facts about the D.C. school choice program. Boehner, a key supporter of the program, chaired the House Committee on Education & the Workforce at the time the program was established.

My only question is, How does Boehner know what's in this spending bill. The Dems haven't shown it to anyone yet.

Still, there are some interesting details here.

That's all bad. But I'm even more worried now about what we don't know about this bill.

Show us the 2009 Omnibus Spending Bill, Madame Speaker

This bill must pass by March 6 and it hasn't been released publicly yet.

I hear it’s stuffed full of Earmarks. The Presidents Press Secretary was pressed yesterday as to whether the President will veto this bill because of the Earmarks. He evaded giving an answer.

I am beginning to think that the Rats intend to pass all their bills without giving time for the press, public, and legislators to read them. They have the votes. All they have to do is sweeten the pot for Snowe, Specter, and Collins, the 3 traitors.

Prediction: This bill, loaded with pork projects (on purpose), will be sent to Obama who will then VETO it, allowing the media to trumpet his fiscal conservative creds.

It’s all a ruse.

They want to keep their guaranteed voting block. The democrats need to keep the inner city poor in their cages. so they have no choice but to vote democrat if they want to eat. No dependency - no government cheese.
If they were to become educated and employed, they'd become Republicans.

by putting it on the internet they are doing a 1984 orwellian editing.

We need to see the ORIGINAL, with all the markups with all the hand written editing.

The the obama retyped edited version.

Time for a Tea Party in front of a good DC charter school.

Ask the kids, on camera, “what do you think of the Democrats’ plan to close down your school?

In truth, long ago the federal government should have bought up the balance of D.C. Were they to do so today, they could raze the slums for open parks, expand buildings as needed, replace most automotive traffic with public transport, and sell leases to companies that would provide services in the city.

This would eliminate most street crime in the city, provide easier access to tourists, dramatically improve the appearance of the place, and provide space for both government buildings, monuments and memorials.

I’ll faint if 0 ever vetoes anything passed by the Dem congress. Prior to his election, he was Reid’s lapdog (I’d use a stronger, more racially evocative expression, but it would probably get me banned). He is still Reid’s (and now Pelosi’s) lapdog; the only difference is that he now actually has some influence useful to them. He will do what they command. They are beholden to Dem special interests. He is beholden to Dem special interests (to the tune of an obscene $750 million in campaign funds). And he is beholden to his congressional masters. He is a willing stooge to his (until recently) fellow congressional libs who have no regard for the legacy of this country, and their intentions very neatly dovetail with his. The Dems will get everything they want, as long as they can buy 1 or 2 RINOs in the Senate. End of story. Game, set, and match.

I think you're close. But no veto. That would be a failure of Obama's leadership.

Here's my prediction:

This bill will be loaded with pork, and have some additional "disposable" pork inserted prior to anybody seeing the complete bill.

Then, Dems will start "exposing" the (disposable) pork (that they never intended to pass anyway) and amending the bill to remove some of the pork. These amendments removing the pork will pass with bi-partisan votes to eliminate the pork. If they are smart, they'll even let the Republicans propose some of the pork reduction amendments, though I don't think Pelosi will want to give any credit to the Republicans for finding the pork, or to agree to any Republican amendment.

This will give the Party Propaganda Ministry (formerly "the media") several great stories. First, the Democrats will ave rediscovered their fiscal responsibility. And Obama will have provided the inspirational leadership to bring the Dems to their fiscal senses. Oh, and you'll have some level of "bipartisanship" in eliminating the pork.

That's one way it could play out.

The other possibility is that they'll vote it all through without allowing anyone to read it. But that shouldn't work in the Senate.

But remember, people, this must be passed by March 6. So it will be a dire emergency. The longer they delay bringing it to the floor, the greater the urgency will be.

I find it incredible that those asshats, that include republicans, vote on ANYTHING that they have not thoroughly read. I’m still appalled that they voted on porkulus without having read it.
