A few days after David Adler's wife decided to leave her law firm in December, he was laid off from his job designing software at Brightcove.
It was shocking. And scary.
Until it wasn't. Adler has quickly learned to appreciate some aspects of his unexpected unemployment.
The 42-year-old spends his days doting on his 6-month-old daughter, visiting museums with his family, and preparing for a possible exhibit of his photos at a local coffee shop in Dedham. Living off savings, unemployment, and severance packages, Adler knows he has to get a job eventually and has started the search. But for now, he's cherishing every moment. "It's our first child and I love watching her grow," Adler said. "And it's nice to have time off and get in touch with my old hobbies."

This is a total cover piece for Obama. Obama is the media's messiah, so they will now look for good in every bad story.
What a difference an administration makes.
Isn’t that the truth. Like a petulant child, the media is up to it’s old tricks.
My friends in Silicon Valley said the same thing in 2002. Two years later the tune changed.
He was unemployed for 2 years?
Um...you’re supposed to be looking for a job if you’re collecting unemployment benefits.
Personally, I believe your words “look for” ought to be changed to “fabricate”. Isn’t this stuff going on in our media the most disgusting situation?
not the entitlementally challenged. They worked hard and put into it, why not enjoy spending it and staying home. Maybe more of us should do the same thing........its the only way responsible people will be able to cash in on their hard earned tax money......
Hubby sounds so feminized I am shocked this happy couple was able to have a child.
A big problem here in MA is the ‘Mandatory Health Insurance’ - my biggest peeve with Mitt Romney. My understanding is that unless you are on unemployment $, you cannot get any help with the COBRA premiums.
A former colleague of mine, who is consulting is paying nearly $500/month COBRA for health insurance just for himself. If you shop around, the plans aren’t really that much cheaper, and the coverages suck.
So unless you get a full time position with benefits, you get screwed here in MA.
Oh - the associated paperwork regarding the health insurance for the MA state income tax form is 2-3 pages. Ridiculous!
Medical professionals could use this article in accidental poisoning cases to induce vomiting!
And guess what? There are no more homeless people now! (Until the next Republican administration that is.)
Gawd I hate liberals.
I figured I'd get a job very quickly, as I was one of small band of elite WAN managers who could handle over 100 networks and keep them separate. Nowadays, my type isn't needed anymore. So after years of contract work here and there, I'm back at school for a degree in cardiovascular technology. Healthcare is where it's at, what with the baby-boomers hitting their senior years.
Reminds me of the liberal push back in the early 90’s to remove scorekeeping at various “children's” sporting events for the “fear” of making someone “FEEL” bad about losing and thus replacing hard work and competition with entitlement. Again just another liberal attempt at creating people who need the government more than the government needs them....
Two months into his layoff. Wait’ll he gets to the 9 or 12 month point and we’ll see how he feels.
Indulge in hobbies with WHAT money?
This article, 6 months ago, would talk about the despair of this 42 year old and how it was all Bush's fault.
Now its all happy time!
This is Potemkin Village communism reporting.
Here are what other 42 year olds are doing. From my local paper yesterday.
Job Search is unemployed executive's full-time quest
I've been there in the past. I've managed to avoid it thus far, but have a whole lot of friends who are going through it as we speak.
Oh, OK. With 0bama in the White House, unemployment is somehow seen as an opportunity to cherish life’s experience. When Bush was president, it meant destitution, starvation and agony.
“The 42-year-old spends his days doting on his 6-month-old daughter, visiting museums with his family, and preparing for a possible exhibit of his photos at a local coffee shop in Dedham.”
One would think, while spending time doting on your 6-month-old daughter is a great parental act, the greater parental act at this time would be getting his sorry a$$ out and getting a job... any job... to feed and house that precious child. I’m getting the idea he’s under the impression 0bama is just going to ride to his rescue in this, the time of change, hope, milk and honey.
