Busted: The Churchill Flap (Obama sends W. Churchill's bust BACK to England)
Newsweek ^ | 2/21/09 | Katie Connolly

Has America's even- tempered new president already ruffled feathers in the land that spawned Borat and Benny Hill? That's certainly how the spiky British press responded after the White House sent back to the British Embassy a bust of Sir Winston Churchill that had occupied a cherished spot in President Bush's Oval Office. Intended as a symbol of transatlantic solidarity, the bust was a loaner from former British prime minister Tony Blair following the September 11 attacks. A bust of Abraham Lincoln—Obama's historical hero—now sits in its place. A White House spokesperson says the Churchill bust was removed before Obama's inauguration as part of the usual changeover operations, adding that every president puts his own stamp on the Oval Office.

"He probably has a bust of Stalin or Mussolini installed in his private quarters."

The idea of a bust is very unsettling, let’s please return to being a nation of laws and not a nation of celebrity-men who engaged in brutal bloody warfare, often for the fun of it....”

Spoken like the indoctrinated, rather than the educated.

Agreed. If he didn’t want it in the WH, why send it back?

The article does say it was "on loan", not a permanent gift. If he's not going to display it, why keep it?

Churchill’s arrogance in WWI (1914-1918) cost over 100,000 men their lives - I know some people will say “so what” to the loss of life - after all, we all know the “important” cause of WWI (I guess, making the world safe for dicators to come)... History is scary if you look it in the eye.

As for Abraham Lincoln, over half a dozen European countries abolished slavery without engaging in a bloodbath that killed over 600,000 men and ended with a 12 year occupation.

Not trashing Winston Churchill, just telling the rest of the story, warts and all.

As for German, English is a germanic language so the syntac matches.

A rather well endowed woman attended the unveiling of a ‘head and shoulders’ statue depicting Winston Churchill.

She told Winston “I traveled a hundred miles to see the unveiling of your bust.”

Mr. Churchill smiled, looked her over and said “Lady, gladly would I return the favor!”

Yeah, and his "arrogance" in World War II saved western civilization from destruction.

Winston Churchill, for the record, had as many American parents as Barak O'bama.

But there’s more to Churchill and Lincoln besides just bloody warfare.

It is totally appropriate that 0bama should disassociate himself from Churchill.

Churchill was a great man, a warrior, an escaped prisoner of war, a writer (of his own work) a statesman, a leader, A man of honour, duty and sacrifice.

everything that 0bama is NOT!

Did Obama try to exchange it for a bust of Chamberlain instead?

Funny you should say that. There was a fast food manager that needed to go on bank run. He asked an employee to watch the store while he was gone for 20 minutes. Grabbed his coat and left.

The employee had maybe 6 months experience making slop for the store. Never had any responsibility before.

We were all working at our jobs quietly, thinking nothing of the manager leaving because we all had our turns watching the store for him.

Numbnuts is unusually quiet. Suddenly he starts realizing he is in charge—but he thinks it’s an actual promotion. He begins acting like a tyrant. Pushing people around. We’re in a shock because here’s this really skinny dork barking orders. Well, he pisses everyone off. The cook tells him he’s going to beat him silly if he doesn’t shut up. The dork responds that the cook is fired.

Then the manager shows up. Long lines. Fights breaking out. Pissed customers leaving or complaining about wrong orders or bad food. Utter chaos and confusion.

Manager surveys situation. Listens to the little naploeon go on a rant about being in charge. Customers yelling. Cook sitting out back cussing up a storm. Manager turns to the wanna be dictator, “You’re fired. Leave now and pick up your check later. NOW!”

Cook is told he is good worker, so he puts out cigarette, comes in from back, and washes hands quietly. Manager asks us if we need anything from the store... maybe a beer after work. We say we’re cool. Manager says, “okay let’s fix this mess then.” Best work day I had in a long time.

Obama is the numbnuts.

We Americans won World War II - if not for us, the war would have dragged on for another decade and it would have only ended because each side ran out of bullets.

We American GI’s won World War II, sure we’ll share the glory with Churchill and our buddies the French, but it was US, the U.S. of A. so stop giving Churchill so much credit... Churchill didn’t carry a single rifle - the current queen of England drove an ambulance, and we Yanks won the war.

No one will convince me otherwise.

A bust of Abraham Lincoln—Obama's historical hero—now sits in its place.

Pure BS - Obambi has nothing in common with Abe Lincoln AT ALL - certainly nothing philosophical.

There are a lot of diplomatic niceties that Presidents and their staff ought to be aware of. The Brits took this as an insult. Intended or not, we ought to go out of our way not to offend people over silliness.

Perhaps, Professor, you were not there when it was offered that slavery was not the sole cause of the Civil War. Is Professor a self-generated designation?

Please don’t go down that road, it just makes Lincoln look even worse.

We can’t go back and change history, so some major characters may have gotten away with real evil. I just think it’s unseemly, even unAmerican, to have a near adoration of a President, who was a dirty knuckled campaigner no different than Howard Dean, John Edards or the latest incarnation of President Lincoln, Illinois’ very own BHO.

I ain’t no fan of BHO, so don’t say I am.
