Regular readers both here and at my online journal, The War on Guns: Notes from the Resistance, know that I have a collection of stories that grows just about every day, tales of official corruption, negligence, stupidity and arrogance I call The "Only Ones" Files.
As I explained a while back in this column, the term derives from a negligent discharge incident involving DEA agent Lee Paige:
"I'm the only one in this room professional enough that I know of to carry this Glock .40," he told a roomful of school kids in an anti-gun/drug lecture, then proceeded to shoot himself in the foot trying to holster the weapon...

I wonder why that is?
I dont suppose it might be because he mistakenly fired his weapon in a room full of school children? (fortunately he only punched a hole in his foot and not some kid)
I am fairly certain that any intelligent legal council would have strongly advised his superiors not to ever let him in a school building again.
Off-duty cop’s pistol accidentally fires at gun show, injuring retired officer

what a moron. somone should direct the officer to the next Eddie the Eagle program.
“..even if .05 of the people do not check, that could still lead to many deaths...Hence my belief that that is a design flaw.”
Huh? Not checking to see if there is a round in the chamber is the flaw! This could have happened with any other auto.
“Huh? Not checking to see if there is a round in the chamber is the flaw! This could have happened with any other auto.”
The point is that pulling the trigger should not be required for a takedown.
Pulling the trigger should only be done when the gun is going to shoot. Period.
IMHO.
Do you own a bolt action? Most of them require you to pull the trigger to remove the bolt.
The first step in cleaning/breakdown of ANY firearm is to ensure it’s not loaded. No shootings from ANY make can occur if that step is followed.
If someone is shot during cleaning, it’s user error, pure and simple; not a design “flaw”.
“If someone is shot during cleaning, its user error, pure and simple; not a design flaw.”
You are correct, user error is the issue.
But to put something in place which will increase user error when alternatives exist, is a design flaw IMO.
Of the million (?) Glocks sold each year, most are to people who know what they are doing. Some will not be. It will be the case each and every time for each million people who buy guns. So why put something in place which one can forsee will lead to a bad outcome if one does not need to?
Again, IMO this is a design flaw, even though user error is always the culprit.
I see he's also gotten over his lack of confidence problem. My thought the first time I saw that clip, before I knew what was going to happen was, "What an arrogant, egotistical jerk."
He's a legend in his own mind.

Your tagline appears to indicate a definite challenge in this forum. From the source:
About "The Only Ones"
The purpose of this feature has never been to bash cops. The only reason I do this is to amass a credible body of evidence to present when those who would deny our right to keep and bear arms use the argument that only government enforcers are professional and trained enough to do so safely and responsibly. And it's also used to illustrate when those of official status, rank or privilege, both in law enforcement and in some other government position, get special breaks not available to we commoners, particularly (but not exclusively) when they're involved in gun-related incidents.
Thanks for the link/update.
no problem. I’ll get the staight dope from my gunfiend sellin’ homeys who were there.
my bet is he was playin’ with his Glock.
It looks like the audience didn’t want to see what a “Professional” could do with the bigger weapon.
Dang! That sucks hard! You see the guy standing next to the itchy finger cop? He peed his pants.
Here’s another story about a cop who can’t be trusted with a gun:

so of COURSE you are going to have more AD's in the law enforcement population than non-LEO population.
the entire premise is flawed once you dig deeper.
and plus, i have never met a LEO, federal or local, who has ever written a gun control law. stop killing the messengers.
Absolutely!!! Great post!!!
Only after the bolt is to the rear do you have to pull the trigger to release the bolt.
That would be a great tag line.
Recent studies by some of the best firearms researchers int eh US if not the world indicate that non-cops (your term) use firearms more than 14 million times per year in one way or another (from stating “I have one” to shooting bad guys) which far a away exceeds the use of firearms by “cops” ( if you do not count carrying one exposed on your hip as a presentation of a firearm).
Loaded firearms-lets see, 200 million +/- a few million in the hands of civilians, who knows how many are loaded and handled daily....
Your statement of more ADs (really NDs)by “cops” is a telling problem statement. If a “professional” segment has more NDs than “nonprofessional non-cops” in a smaller population group, they are in fact, a danger to society.
You need to dig deeper. Facts talk, suppositions are just opinions.
Quote the sources and I'll bite. Make statements of opinion, I'll argue to see facts.
Note: I have great respect for most “cops”, but they are our servants, not the other way around.
Regards
