Still think cops are the 'only ones' who can be trusted with guns?

Regular readers both here and at my online journal, The War on Guns: Notes from the Resistance, know that I have a collection of stories that grows just about every day, tales of official corruption, negligence, stupidity and arrogance I call The "Only Ones" Files.
As I explained a while back in this column, the term derives from a negligent discharge incident involving DEA agent Lee Paige:
"I'm the only one in this room professional enough that I know of to carry this Glock .40," he told a roomful of school kids in an anti-gun/drug lecture, then proceeded to shoot himself in the foot trying to holster the weapon...

I thought Glocks have a triple safety system?
That is a fact. Three safety measures to guarantee your Glock never misfires.
1. leave it in the box.
2. leave it unloaded in the box.
3. lock the unloaded gun in its box in a safe and try to forget it's there then buy a Colt 1911a1 to depend on.
Just kidding, a Glock is a decent firearm if you spend sufficient time to become intimately familiar with its quirks and safe handling requirements.
On second thought, just buy a 1911, nearly 100 years of reliability can't be argued with..

I thought Glocks have a triple safety system? They do, but like many guns, they fire when the tirgger is pulled.

I thought Glocks have a triple safety system?Which proves the axiom: If you try to make something idiot-proof, they just come out with better idiots.

That was one of the most successful advertisement gimmicks ever invented.
In reality, the Glocks have no safety that prevents the trigger from being pulled. It’s also amazing for a firearm that blows up as frequently as the Glocks they are still as popular as they are.
I don’t recommend Glocks for beginners. They demand much more attention than most firearms.

Agree with you on that.
Also, doesn’t the Glock require the trigger to be pulled for a take down of the weapon? The trigger should only be pulled when one is firing the weapon. IMO, this is a very poor design.

The very last place I ever want to find myself is near cops with their gun out. When I find myself in such a place I immediately put two bullet travel diameters between me and them. Cops and guns are a bad mix. If you want cops to be safer take the guns away from them. Friendly fire is the second or third way cops die.

DEA Agent Who Shot Self In Foot Sues U.S.excerpt:
Paige, who writes that he was "once regarded as one of the best undercover agents, if not the best, in the DEA," points to the clip's recent airing on popular television shows and via the Internet as the reason he can no longer work undercover. He also notes that he is no longer "permitted or able to give educational motivational speeches and presentations."

I really do find these types of threads comical. It allows all the cop haters to come out of the woodwork and air their grievances. Are we really still prefacing articles with this years old instance?

doesnt the Glock require the trigger to be pulled for a take down of the weapon? Many do, some don't. I don't know the full list, but it's not just glocks. My Ruger Mark II does. The Sig 226 I plan to buy in the next few months doesn't. M&P don't either.
I simply don't understand ND. I've been handling firearms for 30+ years and not once would I pull the trigger without knowing exactly what would happen. I'm super paranoid about it...I check and double check.

That was a hilarious youtube video. What was amazing was that he was able to carry on and attempt to give the class after being shot in the foot. The funniest part is at the end, when he attempts to bring out the semi auto carbine (not sure what the rifle is) and the whole class gets nervous and someone in the classroom says “put it down!!!”

Place your finger alongside the barrel of the handgun until ready to shoot
This is is key. Everytime I got to a range MOST of the people there are violating this.
NOT hovering over the trigger.
NOT near the trigger.
NOT just to outside the side of the trigger guard.
OFF the trigger.
AWAY from the trigger.
CLEAR of the trigger guard.
and GROUNDED to a solid part of the gun.
The human hand is designed and wired to close with all fingers grasping. Leaving one finger hovering near-ish the trigger is just asking for anything which distracts you or surprises you to cause your hand, including trigger finger to close. I an convinced that most people think 'off the trigger' is just 'skin not actually touching the metal of the trigger'.

Not when you put in a loaded magazine, chamber a round and then pull the trigger like the DEA guy did.

Dittos to that.
I have a 1911a1 and my future son in law has a Glock 17/9mm.The glock had no safety, just what looks like a double trigger. This last Thanksgiving he brought it over for some target shooting. I was uncomfortable handeling it loaded. A 1911 cocked and locked is double safetied.Snap off the safety it still won't shoot unless you hold it right.

“I’m super paranoid about it...I check and double check.”
So do I. However, in a top selling gun like the Glock, even if .05 of the people do not check, that could still lead to many deaths if millions of those types of guns are sold. Hence my belief that that is a design flaw.

Amen. Keep the booger hook off the bang switch and you won’t have any problems. All guns are always loaded...period.
